Lakeland University senior
Larry Rivers (
Dearborn Heights, Mich.) was tabbed for conference and national honors Tuesday following his record-breaking performance in the Muskies football team's Homecoming win over Wisconsin Lutheran College Saturday.
Rivers was named the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference's Offensive Player of the Week Tuesday morning. The same morning the Muskies running back also was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week, the website's weekly all-star list honoring the top players nationally across NCAA Division III at each position from the previous week.
Rivers received the awards after rushing for 204 yards and six touchdowns in Lakeland's 56-7 win over Wisconsin Lutheran Saturday. He set a new Muskies' single-game record for rushing touchdowns and also tied nearly 53-year old Lakeland records for overall touchdowns and points in a game set by Pat Curran against Northwestern (Wis.) Nov. 2, 1968. His six touchdowns and 36 points also tied NACC single-game marks for rushing touchdowns, total touchdowns and points scored.
Rivers scored touchdowns from 7, 4, 1, 7, 8 and 9 yards out, and also averaged 8.2 yards per rush for the game. He did all of his work in little more than two quarters, exiting the game for good after his sixth touchdown with 10 minutes, 29 seconds left in the third quarter.
Rivers received NACC weekly honors for the second time in his career and first time since Sept. 24, 2018. The D3football.com weekly award also is the first of his career, and first for a Muskie since
McNemon Vincent was named to the team earlier this year on March 23 during Lakeland's brief spring campaign.
Already Lakeland's all-time leading rusher with 3,562 career yards, Rivers is off to a flying start to the season with 526 yards rushing, an 8.3 yard per carry average and eight touchdowns through three games. He leads the NACC in total yards, rushing yards per game (175.3) and rushing touchdowns, and also is tied for the lead nationally in Division III in rushing scores and ranks second in total rushing yards, third in rushing yards/game and fifth in yards/carry.
Lakeland is 3-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play and is home again Saturday when it welcomes new NACC member St. Norbert College for a 6 p.m. kickoff at Taylor Field.
