PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Senior Day was a success for the Lakeland University women's volleyball team, which once again pounced on an opponent early and pulled through a battle late to sweep Dominican University Saturday afternoon in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match.
The Muskies topped the Stars 25-14, 25-17, 26-24 for their fifth straight win and third straight victory in conference. Lakeland climbed back to the .500 mark overall on the season at 9-9 and is now 3-1 in the NACC with a busy stretch continuing with three more conference contests next week.
The Muskies honored seven seniors before the match, with
Matejka Abeita (
Gallup, N.M.),
Emily Bird (
Waterford, Wis.),
Chloe Cunningham (
Oviedo, Fla.),
Emily Duchow (
Potter, Wis.),
Julia Hanson (
Algonquin, Ill.) and
Lauren Myklebust (
Wisconsin Dells, Wis.) plus manager
Ashley Eichmeier (
Hilbert, Wis.) all recognized.
Lakeland also finally slayed a perennial nemesis in recent years. Dominican had won 12 of the teams' previous 13 meetings, including the last five, but the Muskies defeated the Stars for the first time since 2016.
The Muskies' formula was similar to the night before when they also swept Concordia University Chicago in three sets. With
Susana Stevens (
So.-Las Cruces, N.M.) and
Katie Metzler (
Jr.-Kewaunee, Wis.) combining for 21 kills, Lakeland had another efficient day on the attack hitting .269 with 45 kills and 17 errors while also holding Dominican (4-10 overall, 1-3 NACC) to a .043 attack percentage (22 kills, 18 errors).
Lakeland also was in charge the first two sets, never trailing and going on runs in both to take control. The Muskies scored eight straight points in the opening set to take a 12-4 lead and went on two five-point runs in the second set, including
Isabella Westerholm (
So.-Prior Lake, Minn.) registering four in a run to an 11-6 lead on the way to the second set win.
The Stars got off to a 6-1 lead in the third set before the Muskies clawed back into the set. Lakeland took its first lead at 10-9 after a Dominican setting error, but the guests would come back to take a 15-12 lead after consecutive kills by Vicky Krzyszkowski. The Muskies would put together another run, though, seven straight points including six served by Abeita, and a kill by Bird put Lakeland ahead 22-18. The Stars would battle back to tie twice, including fighting off a match point at 24-23, but a kill by Stevens followed by a service ace by
Maeve Sullivan (
Jr.-Chicago, Ill.) clinched the win.
Stevens finished with 11 kills and Metzler added ten kills plus four blocks (one solo, three assisted).
Brelynn Scoles (
Jr.-Kewaskum, Wis.) also added eight kills and
Kelly Swope (
Jr.-Heyworth, Ill.) chipped in seven kills. Duchow finished with 30 assists and three block assists and Sullivan paced the back row with 14 digs.
Krzyszkowski led Dominican with nine kills without an error in 14 attacks (.643 hitting percentage) and Cassidy Spies added eight kills plus a team-high seven digs.
The Muskies are home again Tuesday when they face Edgewood College at 7 p.m. at the Woltzen Gymnasium.
