Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Marian spoils Lakeland home finale by 3-0 score

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Marian University scored twice in a span of less than four minutes in the first half to gain control and the Lakeland University women's soccer team fell by a 3-0 score in its final home appearance of the season Wednesday night at a chilly Taylor Field.

Meghan Batzner scored both first half goals for the Sabres, who also added a score early in the second half. Lakeland dropped to 5-11 overall and 1-9 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference with two matches remaining in the season.

The Muskies spent much of the match on defense, with Marian (6-6-3 overall, 5-4-2 NACC) controlling possession and finishing with a 25-3 shots advantage. Lakeland was able to stave off the Sabres for the first 26 minutes, though, with Haley Rich (Sr.-West Chicago, Ill.) making three saves in that time.

Marian would break through in the 27th minute. Megan Harbeck hit a corner kick from the left into heavy traffic in front of the goal, but Sabres forward Meghan Batzner was able to get to it and head it in past Rich for a 1-0 lead.

Batzner would score again just 3 minutes, 43 seconds later. Caitlin Traver got to a ball on the end line and sent it on a nearly flat line in front of the goal to Batzner, who was on the left post and directed it in for her eighth goal of the season and a 2-0 lead Marian would take into halftime.

The Sabres would add one more goal in the 55th minute, when Dallas Kreisa hit a cross from the left side to Ashley Welk in front of the goal, 15 yards out. In one motion Welk quickly redirected the ball with her right foot inside the right post for her ninth goal of the season.

Lakeland's offensive chances were limited throughout. Aimee Hild (Jr.-Plano, Ill.) recorded two of the Muskies' three shot attempts, including a free kick on goal in the first half and another wide in the 61st minute. Hanna Brouch (So.-Kaukauna, Wis.) also made a run late in the first half before her shot from the right side was wide.

Rich finished making ten saves, going all the way in goal save for a stretch of 1:46 in the second half when she came out briefly after contact with a Marian attacker. Faith Turley (Jr.-Lincoln, Ill.) filled in goal when Rich was out and also played in the field.

Lakeland is on the road Saturday to take on Illinois Institute of Technology at 6 p.m. in Chicago.
