Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Muskies win fourth straight, finish home schedule with sweep of Marian

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Kelly Swope (Jr.-Heyworth, Ill.) led the offense with 13 kills as the Lakeland University women's volleyball team won its fourth straight match and closed out its regular season home schedule on a high note with a three-set sweep of Marian University Friday night at the Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies prevailed 25-17, 25-22, 25-22 to move to 14-12 overall and 7-4 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. Lakeland also won for the 10th time in its last 13 matches.

The Muskies got through against the Sabres (7-21 overall, 4-7 NACC) by coming up big late in the second and third sets. Lakeland won the second set by taking four of the final five points after the score was tied at 21-21 late and then rallied from a deficit late in the third.

Marian led 21-18 in the third after a kill by Natalie Yanke and appeared in position to push the Muskies into their 18th match this season of at least four sets, but a long point ended in a Sabres attack error to bring Lakeland back within two. The Muskies would extend the run to four straight points and take a 22-21 lead before Marian earned a side out to tie the score back up, but Lakeland would score the final three points of the math. Swope delivered back-to-back kills, including a thunderous putaway at the net to get to match point, and Emily Duchow (Sr.-Potter, Wis.) set Susana Stevens (So.-Las Cruces, N.M.) for the winning kill to close it out.

A competitive match most of the night nevertheless had just four lead changes and 15 ties through three sets. Lakeland pulled away with a strong finish in the first set, as the Muskies held just a 14-13 lead before outscoring the Sabres 11-4 the rest of the set. The second set was the closest with eight ties and two lead changes, but Marian jumped out to an early 10-5 lead in the third and didn't trail again until 22-21.

Swope hit .323 for the match with her 13 kills in 31 attack attempts and also added 12 digs and two service aces. Stevens also posted 11 kills, Brelynn Scoles (Jr.-Kewaskum, Wis.) finished with nine kills and Katie Metzler (Jr.-Kewaunee, Wis.) added eight kills. Scoles also paced the defense with 16 digs, Duchow added 31 assists and 14 digs and Hailey DeGrave (Jr.-Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) added 13 digs.

Kaitlyn Merrill led Marian with 12 kills. Reagan Jasica posted a match-high 18 digs and Anna Tapia finished with 22 assists, 13 digs and two service aces.

The Muskies are on the road Saturday, traveling to Chicago to take on Illinois Institute of Technology at noon for the Scarlet Hawks' Senior Day.
