MEQUON, Wis. – The Cheese Bowl trophy went back to Concordia University Wisconsin for the first time since 2018 as the Lakeland University football team was defeated 30-20 Saturday afternoon at CUW's Tomasini Stadium.
Devon Harris (
So.-Milwaukee, Wis.) rushed for over 170 yards for the second straight week and
Lane Sobieski (
Sr.-Berlin, Wis.) passed for a career-high 242 yards, but the Falcons' experience won the day as the Muskies dropped to 1-6 overall and 1-4 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. Concordia is now 7-1 overall and 5-1 in conference.
Lakeland once again outgained its opponent, piling up 517 yards of offense and 28 first downs. The Muskies were hurt by two turnovers, though, and also had four drives end on downs in CUW territory.
Concordia scored first in the game on a 62-yard touchdown pass from James Linn to Samuel Campbell Jr. less than six minutes into the contest, and the hosts would never trail. The Falcons would go ahead 14-0 early in the second quarter before Lakeland answered when Sobieski hit
Kolby Cohen (
So.-Missouri City, Texas) for a 70-yard touchdown pass with 6:43 left in the second quarter to close within 14-7.
Concordia would score twice in the final two minutes of the half on field goals by Zach Heinen to lead 20-7 at halftime. The Muskies would come back early in the third quarter, driving 77 yards in six plays with Harris scoring on a 13-yard scamper to get within 20-14.
Lakeland would never get closer, though. Heinen made his third field goal of the game, a 32-yarder with 5:37 left in the third to push Concordia's lead to 23-14, and the Muskies came up dry on five straight drives in the second half, including one ending on a fumble at the CUW 7 and another late on an interception. Lakeland added one more touchdown in the final minute when Sobieski and Cohen connected again for a 20-yard score with 51 seconds left for the game's final points.
Sobieski completed 21 of 40 passes for 242 yards and also rushed 18 times for 57 yards. Harris carried 30 times for 172 yards, one week after gaining a career-high 173 yards against Concordia Chicago.
Harris also caught a team-high nine passes for 79 yards. Cohen added five catches for a career-high 128 yards.
Justin McMahon (
So.-Kyle, Texas) led the defense with nine tackles (six solo, three assisted), a blocked field goal attempt and a pass breakup.
Jake Leclaire (
Jr.-Stuart, Fla.) added eight tackles,
Charles Kobe (
Jr.-Glendale, Wis.) forced and recovered a fumble and
Matt Glogowski (
So.-San Diego, Calif.) finished with one sack.
Linn completed 19 of 32 passes for 255 yards and two touchdowns for Concordia, which gained 444 yards of offense. Geoffrey Mazur rushed 20 times for 128 yards.
