Davis-Troller scores but Lakeland falls to Concordia in men’s soccer finale

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Jordan Davis-Troller (Fr.-Cottage Grove, Wis.) scored his fourth goal of the season but the Lakeland University men's soccer team fell to Concordia University Wisconsin 4-1 in its final game of the season Wednesday night at Taylor Field.

Davis-Troller scored with an assist from Michecadet Gethand (Jr.-Jackson, Wis.) at 20 minutes, 34 seconds, running on to a blast from 22 yards out that beat the Falcons goalkeeper inside the right post. The score briefly tied the match at 1-1, but Concordia answered with a goal just 21 seconds later and didn't look back.

The Falcons clinched a spot in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament as the more opportunistic team in a wide-open game that saw the two teams go up and down the field repeatedly, with both getting good chances throughout.

Concordia (10-3-4 overall, 7-2-3 NACC) finished with a slim 14-12 edge in shot attempts and held a 10-4 lead in shots on goal, but the Muskies posted an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks and also outshot the Falcons 7-6 in the second 45 minutes. Davis-Troller, Gethand and second half entrant Bryan Tovar (So.-Lake in the Hills, Ill.) all finished with two shots each.

The Falcons scored first, though, just over five minutes into the match with a quick tic-tac-toe from Nick Hummel to Will King to Ivan Cuellar, who scored inside the right post from 12 yards out on the right side of the box. CUW also answered the Muskies goal with a quick counter shortly after the kickoff as Carson Kelly scored with an assist from King.

Concordia added a third goal in the 30th minute with a header from Hummel, and the Falcons held that lead into halftime. CUW added one goal in the second half in the 63rd minute on another header by Hummel, this one from right in front of the goal after a cross from Gilberto Gomez.

Lakeland kept the pressure on late and had three shot attempts in the final 3 1/2 minutes. Joseph Reyes (Jr.-Pico River, Calif.) fired wide from 20 yards out straight, Tovar missed just to the left of the goal on a run in the 88th minute, and Gethand had the last chance inside the final minute but missed high.

Carson Galla (Jr.-Deerfield, Wis.) started in goal and made one save before Ben Taylor (So.-Sheboygan, Wis.) came on and made five saves. Brahm Dell Adema (Fr.-Plano, Texas), Alejandro Salazar (Fr.-Wisconsin Dells, Wis.) and Owen Spang (Fr.-Allouez, Wis.) were among others to have quality chances with shots on or near the goal for Lakeland.

Lakeland finished the season with a 3-11-3 overall record and 1-10-1 in the NACC. The Muskies featured just one senior on this year's roster, Alessandro Bianchi (Venice, Italy). Gethand finished as the team's leader in assists (6) and points (14), while Gethand, Davis-Troller and Dirk Dell Adema (Fr.-Howards Grove, Wis.) tied for the team lead in goals with four each.
