MEQUON, Wis. – An improved season for the Lakeland University women's soccer team ended on a down note with a 6-0 loss at Concordia University Wisconsin Wednesday afternoon at Fitting Field.
The Muskies faced a tough assignment in their season finale against one of the top teams in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference, and the Falcons scored four times in the second half to pull away. Lakeland finished the season with a 5-13 overall record and 1-11 in the NACC.
The Muskies put up a solid wall against Concordia (14-2-3 overall, 9-2-1 NACC) for nearly 43 minutes, trailing just 1-0 as the first half wound down. The Falcons scored in the 11th minute on a goal by Sabrina Moore but the score remained that way all the way until 2 minutes, 14 seconds remained in the half, when Selena Esten scored to push the lead to 2-0.
Concordia began to build on that lead quickly after halftime, scoring just 34 seconds into the second half on a goal by Isabel Downs. The Falcons added two more goals 3 1/2 minutes apart between the 61st and 64th minutes, with Esten and Downs both scoring again to give CUW a 5-0 lead. The hosts tacked on one more goal with just over a minute left in the match from Grace Wilshire for the final score.
Concordia controlled possession most of the match and finished with a 37-2 bulge in shots on goal.
Marlen Reyes (
Jr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) attempted both shots for the Muskies in the second half, including the lone shot on goal in the 67th minute.
Haley Rich (
Sr.-West Chicago, Ill.) made 12 saves in goal in just over 70 minutes.
Faith Turley (
Jr.-Lincoln, Ill.) came on for the final 19:48 and made two saves. The match was the final one seniors Rich and
Riley Jahnke (
Howards Grove, Wis.).
Lakeland still finished with a three-win improvement in its first year under head coach
Heather Robare.
Alondra Reyes (
Jr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) led the team in goals (7) and points (15), while
Hanna Brouch (
So.-Kaukauna, Wis.) added five goals and 12 points and was one of four players to tie for the team lead with two assists each.
