Wisconsin Lutheran pounces early, defeats Lakeland men’s soccer

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Michael Barragan (Jr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) scored his second goal of the season but the Lakeland University men's soccer team fell to Wisconsin Lutheran College 5-1 Wednesday night in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match.

Barragan converted a penalty kick with just over a minute left in the match to get the Muskies on the board, but little else went right for the hosts. Wisconsin Lutheran avenged a loss to Lakeland last year and improved to 7-2-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the NACC while the Muskies dropped to 2-6-3 overall and 0-6-1 in conference.

It was a hat trick of bad news for Lakeland in the first half as WLC scored three times in the first 30 minutes. The Warriors tallied the first goal just 38 seconds into the match as the Muskies couldn't get the ball out of their defensive end and K.J. McNealey eventually made them pay for a 1-0 lead.

Wisconsin Lutheran then was awarded a penalty kick in the 24th minute after a handball call on the Muskies in the box. Jason Cano converted for a 2-0 lead, and the news went from bad to worse for Lakeland in the 30th minute, when a defender's attempt to clear a ball in front of goalkeeper Carson Galla (Jr.-Deerfield, Wis.) instead was redirected right past Galla and into the goal for an own goal.

The Warriors added on midway through the second half when Tony Bedolla sent a through ball ahead to Joseph Raasch on a breakaway, and he won the one-on-one with Galla to increase the lead for 4-0. WLC added one more in the 77th minute when Bedolla from the middle looped a pass to Cano, who in one motion hammered it just inside the right post and into the top right corner for his second goal of the match and 12th of the season.

The Muskies avoided the shutout when a handball was called on the Warriors in the box with 1 minute, 19 seconds left in the match. Barragan was chosen to take the penalty kick and he converted his first shot of the match for the final margin.

Wisconsin Lutheran outshot Lakeland 18-12, but the Muskies had few quality chances. Cole Cederwall (Fr.-Spring Valley, Calif.) attempted three shots and Michecadet Gethand (Jr.-Jackson, Wis.) added two shot attempts.

Galla made five saves in goal for the Muskies. Puma Galvan made three saves for the Warriors.

Lakeland goes on the road for its next match Saturday when it travels to face Rockford University at 11 a.m. in Rockford, Ill.
