Aurora wins big in Lakeland’s final road trip of season

MONTGOMERY, Ill. – Aurora University clinched a share of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference football regular season title with a 68-0 win over Lakeland University Saturday.

Little went right for the Muskies in their final road trip of the season as Aurora scored 28 points in the second quarter to build a big halftime lead and never slowed down. The Spartans improved to 8-1 overall and 7-0 in the NACC while Lakeland is 2-7 overall and 2-5 in conference with its season finale at home against Rockford University next Saturday.

The Muskies were held to 168 yards of offense, more than 300 yards below their season average. Aurora also rolled to 611 yards of offense and Lakeland also lost the turnover battle 3-0.

The Muskies stopped the Spartans on their first drive, but the hosts followed with touchdowns on their next five drives. Another touchdown with 14 seconds in the first half gave Aurora a 41-0 halftime lead.

The Muskies' best chance at scoring came in the third quarter, when a 12-play, 50-yard drive advanced to the Aurora 25 before ending on downs.

Lane Sobieski (Sr.-Berlin, Wis.) passed for 49 yards and also rushed for 28 yards. Devon Harris (So.-Milwaukee, Wis.) gained 41 yards on the ground and Devin Martin (So.-Conyers, Ga.) led the receivers with three catches.

Jake Leclaire (Jr.-Stuart, Fla.) was credited with a share of 10 tackles (two solo, eight assisted) to lead the defense. Justin McMahon (So.-Kyle, Texas) notched seven tackles (two solo, five assisted) and Leondre Townsend (Jr.-Menomonee Falls, Wis.) added six tackles (three solo, three assisted) including two tackles for loss.

Jhequay Chretin rushed for 167 yards and three touchdowns for Aurora, which gained 357 yards on the ground and averaged 7.9 yards per carry. Ta'vion Geanes also added 102 yards rushing. Josh Swanson completed 14 of 28 passes, but for 254 yards and four touchdowns.

Lakeland is back home for its season finale and Senior Day against Rockford next Saturday at 1 p.m.
