PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The Lakeland University men's volleyball team jumped on St. Norbert College from the start and delivered its most dominant performance of the young season with a three-set sweep Sunday afternoon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies hit .323 for the match and were rarely threatened in a 25-14, 25-22, 25-18 victory in a non-conference match between two Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference foes. Lakeland won its third straight match and improved to 3-1 this season while the Green Knights dropped to 2-5 after playing their third match in two days.
The Muskies finished with 34 kills and just 13 errors in 65 attacks, frequently ending points quickly. Lakeland was especially hot in the first two sets, hitting .500 with 11 kills and just three errors in the first set and falling off only slightly in the second set with a .417 hitting percentage including 14 kills and four errors.
Lakeland never trailed in the first set and set the tone with a quick 9-0 run to take a 10-1 lead. The Muskies would go on to win the set easily, and took control of the second set just past the halfway mark with a 6-0 run including two service aces by
Cameron Ekum (
Sr.-Wales, Wis.). The second ace was Ekum's program-record 100th of his career and gave Lakeland an 18-13 lead, and the Muskies would hold on after St. Norbert clawed back within two late in the set.
Lakeland hit .120 in the third set with nine kills and six errors but still never trailed and pulled away just past the halfway point of the set, going on a 6-1 run capped by an ace by
Ben Busalacchi (
So.-Muskego, Wis.) for an 18-11 lead. The Muskies never led by less than five the rest of the way.
Colin Kenney (So.-Shorewood, Wis.) led Lakeland with nine kills, Busalacchi also finished with nine kills and a team-high six digs and Ekum added seven kills, 24 assists and four aces.
Matt Misheck (
Sr.-Oak Forest, Ill.) also added six kills in just 10 swings for a .600 attack percentage.
Josh Hauke led St. Norbert with six kills. The Green Knights hit .067 with 19 kills and 15 errors.
