CLERMONT, Fla. – Monmouth (Ill.) College scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings and an abbreviated day for the Lakeland University softball team ended with a 3-1 loss late Thursday night at the Clermont Spring Games.
The Muskies lost for just the second time on their spring break and dropped their lone game of the day as rain affected the schedule on the fifth day of their trip. Lakeland's first game of the day against Emerson (Mass.) College was canceled due to rain, and the game against Monmouth was moved to 7 p.m., more than two hours after originally scheduled.
Monmouth (1-6 overall) won for the first time this season behind outstanding pitching from Abby Leber and clutch two-out hitting in all three of its scoring rallies.
Leber threw a complete game and allowed just four hits with nine strikeouts. The Fighting Scots also scored all three of their runs with two outs and in two of the three innings put all of their baserunners on after two outs to start the inning.
The Muskies (5-2 overall) were first to get on the board in the top of the second inning with their own two-out rally.
Hannah Volom (
Fr.-Portage, Ind.) and
Makenna Hullinger (
Fr.-St. John, Ind.) both singled to put runners at first and second, and
Nyah Odekirk (
So.-Fond du Lac, Wis.) came through with a single for her first collegiate hit to score Volom.
Monmouth scored a run in the third to tie, with Calista Warmowski singling with two outs and later scoring on a wild pitch. The Scots took the lead in the fourth when Lillian Hucke walked with two outs, moved to second on a single by Leber and scored on another single by Addison Riley for a 2-1 lead. Monmouth added another run in the fifth when Warmowski led off with a single and later scored on a two-out RBI single by Olivia Riddley.
Lakeland was unable to threaten again and was held without a hit in the final four innings. Leber retired the final 12 hitters she faced after hitting
Emyli Kreiser (
Jr.-Greenfield, Wis.) to lead off the fourth inning.
Madi Johnson (
So.-Vernon Hills, Ill.) started and took the loss, allowing four hits and two runs with four strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings.
Marissa Varela (
Jr.-Calumet City, Ill.) came on in relief to throw 1 2/3 innings and allowed four hits and a run, and
Elizabeth Groonwald (
Sr.-Hartford, Wis.) pitched a hitless two-thirds of an inning.
The Muskies wrap up their spring break trip Friday with two games, first taking on Millkin (Ill.) University and then facing Lake Forest (Ill.) College.
