Vassar’s Brewers down Lakeland on final game of baseball spring trip

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – A good spring break trip for the Lakeland University baseball team ended on a soggy note as Vassar (N.Y.) College scored the go-ahead run in the fourth inning on the way to a 10-4 win over the Muskies in a rain-shortened game Saturday morning at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.

Lakeland's final contest of its trip was scheduled for nine innings but was halted in the fifth due to rain. The Muskies concluded the trip with a 7-4 record, the most wins on a spring trip in school history and the best winning percentage since going 6-3 in Florida to start the 2012 season.

Lakeland left with a sour taste after rallying from an early 4-1 deficit only to see Vassar's Brewers score six times in the final two innings, including five runs in the fifth before play was suspended and the game eventually called.

Vassar (2-5 overall) scored four times in the first, including a pair of unearned runs and a two-run double by Nick Greenhawt. The Muskies got on the board in the first with a sacrifice fly by Jack Banks (Sr.-Mountain View, Calif.) to score Nathan Hemmerling (Jr.-Riverside, Calif.), and then added three in the second. Hunter Frisk (Jr.-Manteca, Calif.) scored on an error, Collin Schutz (Sr.-Saint Amant, La.) tripled to drive in Austin Palmer (Fr.-Oro Valley, Ariz.), and Schutz stole home on a double-steal to tie the game at 4-4.

The Brewers of Vassar-nicknamed after founder Matthew Vassar, who established the college in 1861 and was part of a family brewing business-scored a run in the fourth without a hit to take the lead. Two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases with nobody out Jaden Millstein hit a sacrifice fly to put Vassar ahead 5-4.

The Brewers then added five runs in the fifth inning, including a two-run double by Millstein. The game was called with two outs in the inning, and the Muskies got on the bus soon after to being their return journey back to Wisconsin.

Lakeland was outhit 11-3, with OakLee Spens (So.-Burbank, Calif.) joining Frisk and Schutz as players to record hits. Schutz pitched 4 1/3 innings and took the loss, allowing seven hits and six runs (four earned) with four strikeouts.

The Muskies are now idle until Thursday, March 24 when they travel to face Carroll University for a 2 p.m. start in Waukesha.
