PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Aaron Fox tallied 11 kills to lead an efficient attack for the University of California Santa Cruz, which continued its mastery of the Lakeland University men's volleyball team in a three-set sweep Thursday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Banana Slugs defeated the Muskies 25-19, 25-15, 25-18 to remain undefeated all-time against Lakeland. UC Santa Cruz improved to 9-0 all-time in the series between the two schools separated by over 2,200 miles but who have played frequently in Lakeland's nine-year history as a varsity program.
The Banana Slugs also capped a 2-0 day against Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference teams with a pair of three-set sweeps at two different locations. UC Santa Cruz (8-13 overall) also defeated St. Norbert College earlier in the afternoon in De Pere before boarding a bus and making the one-hour drive south to take on Lakeland.
The Muskies (6-10 overall) played on their heels much of the night and were unable to slow down the Santa Cruz attack. The Banana Slugs hit .402 with 44 kills and just nine errors, and also added eight service aces.
Lakeland got off to a good start scoring the first four points of the match, but that would be the high mark of the evening on the scoreboard. UC Santa Cruz scored four straight points to tie, and went ahead for good two points later at 6-5, gradually pulling away as the set went on.
Lakeland scored the first point of the second set, but that would be its final lead of the night. The Banana Slugs scored eight straight points to take an 8-1 lead, went on to win the second set and built a quick 5-1 lead in never trailing in the third set.
The Muskies picked up their play as the match went on and received eight kills each from
Cameron Ekum (
Sr.-Wales, Wis.),
Matt Misheck (
Sr.-Oak Forest, Ill.) and
Ben Busalacchi (
So.-Muskego, Wis.), including several thunderous kills from Busalacchi in the second and third sets. Lakeland hit a respectable .226 for the match with 31 kills and 12 errors in 84 attacks, including .292 in the third set with ten kills and three errors.
Ekum also added 16 assists and four service aces.
Martin Carrillo (
Jr.-Mundelein, Ill.) also posted 11 assists and Misheck and
Alex Burgos (
Jr.-Salem, Wis.) led the defense with seven digs each.
Colby Hurdle also added eight kills for UC Santa Cruz, which featured five players with at least six kills. Maxwell Mednick also posted a match-high ten digs.
Lakeland has two matches remaining in its season and will be on the road for its next match at St. Norbert on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in De Pere.
