DUBUQUE, Iowa –
Alessandro Bianchi (
Jr.-Venice, Italy) scored his first singles win of the season but the University of Dubuque pulled out a pair of close wins in singles play to defeat the Lakeland University men's tennis team 6-3 in a non-conference dual Tuesday.
Bianchi defeated Zach Norman of Dubuque 6-4, 6-2 at Number 6 singles for the Muskies' lone singles win and his first win of the season. Lakeland might've had two more singles wins and a match win, though, if it hadn't come up just shy in a pair of thoroughly competitive singles matches filled with tiebreakers.
Jacob Larson (
Sr.-Wauwatosa, Wis.) lost a three-set match to Stefan Zrnic at No. 2 singles, including dropping the first set in a tiebreaker. He rallied to win the second set but then lost the tiebreaking third set and the match 7-6 (10-6), 4-6, 10-6.
Evan Vorpahl (
So.-Sheboygan, Wis.) also was a victim of double-jeopardy in tiebreakers at No. 3 singles against Ryan Kiddle. Vorpahl dropped the first set in a tiebreaker and then lost another close tiebreaker in the second set to succumb 7-6 (10-8), 7-6 (10-6).
Larson and Vorpahl both were part of doubles wins as Lakeland won two of three in doubles play. Larson teamed with
Nick Larson (
So.-Sheboygan, Wis.) to defeat Zrnic and Milan Zivkovic 8-6 at No. 1 singles, and Vorpahl and
Luke Roe (
Fr.-Plymouth, Wis.) also paired up for an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles against Kiddle and Dawson Freese.
The Muskies continue their Dubuque swing Wednesday with a dual against Loras College at 2 p.m.
