Domangue fires first shutout, Banks homers as Lakeland salvages split with St. Norbert

DE PERE, Wis. – Peyton Domangue (So.-Thibodaux, La.) threw his first collegiate shutout and the Lakeland University baseball team bounced back from a first game loss to split a doubleheader with St. Norbert College Saturday afternoon at Van Alstine Field.

The Muskies fell 5-2 in the first game but came back for a 2-0 win in the second part of the briskly played Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference twinbill. The two nine-inning games were played in a combined 3 hours, 59 minutes, and Lakeland is now 14-9 overall on the season and 4-5 in the NACC.

Domangue delivered his second straight strong start and his best yet, going the distance and scattering ten hits over nine innings with four strikeouts. He stranded a total of 11 St. Norbert runners, including the bases loaded in the first inning and two runners in both the fourth and seventh.

Domangue and St. Norbert starter Aiden Trusky were locked in a scoreless pitcher's duel for the first five innings before the Muskies broke through in the sixth with an unlikely power source. Jack Banks (Sr.-Mountain View, Calif.) stepped up with one out in the sixth and delivered a solo home run, the first homer of his Lakeland career giving his team a 1-0 lead.

The Muskies added a second run one inning later. Zak Keegan (Fr.-Frankfort, Ill.) led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lane Sobieski (So.-Berlin, Wis.) and scored on a single by catcher Kejuan Harvey (So.-Elgin, Ill.). Domangue then shut down a threat in the bottom of the seventh. The Green Knights opened the inning with back-to-back singles to lead off the inning before the Lakeland hurler retired the next three batters, getting Adam Cootway to foul out on a bunt attempt, Sebastien Dubois to line out and Trevor Reinhardt to fly out.

St. Norbert (10-10 overall, 7-3 NACC) got the early jump in the first game, scoring three times in the bottom of the second. A pair of singles to open the inning were followed by two Lakeland errors resulting in two unearned runs against starting pitcher Brody Fay (Fr.-Surprise, Ariz.).

The Muskies scored one run in the sixth when Collin Schutz (Sr.-Saint Amant, La.) led off with a single, stole second, went to third when the throw to second went into center field and then scored on a ground out by Banks. Harvey then added a run-scoring single in the seventh to cut the deficit to 3-2, but St. Norbert's Mason Sefcik avoided further damage by stranding the bases loaded.

The Green Knights added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh as Reinhardt singled to drive in a run and pinch hitter Grady Brick hit a sacrifice fly. Lakeland put one runner on in both the eighth and ninth innings but Noah Lindsley pitched two shutout innings for the save.

The Muskies finished with six hits in the first game and 11 for the entire doubleheader. Schutz and Hunter Frisk (Jr.-Manteca, Calif.) both posted two hits in the first game and three hits each on the day. Fay took the loss in the opener, allowing nine hits and five runs (three earned) with one strikeout and three walks in 6 1/3 innings.

The Muskies are back home Monday when they host Dominican University for two games starting at noon.
