Nelson, Hornsby, Rohr all have big days as Lakeland takes two from Wisconsin Lutheran

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Hannah Nelson (So.-Loves Park, Ill.) had a nearly perfect day at the plate and Hannah Hornsby (Sr.-Brookville, Ind.) and Elizabeth Rohr (Fr.-Kewaunee, Wis.) also both had big afternoons hitting as the Lakeland University softball team defeated Wisconsin Lutheran College twice Tuesday afternoon.

The Muskies brought out the big bats in both games, defeating the Warriors by scores of 12-4 and 10-4, including winning the first game in six innings. Lakeland picked up an important Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader sweep and improved to 16-11 overall and 11-7 in conference games.

The Muskies piled up 28 hits over the two games, including 17 in the first game. Lakeland also hit five home runs on the day, including two more by Hornsby to give her seven homers on the season, a mark now tied for second-most in the NACC and already tied for the third-most in a season in program history.

The Muskies scored early and often in the first game, with four runs in both the second and third innings and two more in the fourth and sixth. Lakeland also took a 4-0 lead midway through the second game before Wisconsin Lutheran (8-23 overall, 1-16 NACC) rallied to tie before the Muskies broke free with a huge final at bat.

Nelson also hit a home run in the first game, when she went 4-for-4 with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Including three more hits and four RBIs in the second game, the Muskies' leadoff hitter finished the day going 7-for-8 with a triple, home run, seven RBIs and three runs scored, and boosted her batting average from .369 entering the doubleheader to .413 after.

Hornsby also went 4-for-4 in the first game and added a double along with a solo home run. She also added two hits in the second game, and her two-run homer in the sixth was the second home run in a six-run seventh inning, following a two-run blast by Juliana Hall (Jr.-Portage, Ind.) earlier in the frame.

Rohr also added five hits on the day, including the best game of her freshman season in the opener. The Lakeland shortstop posted career highs with three hits and four RBIs, with a pair of two-run doubles.

Cheyenne Mathas (Sr.-St. John, Ind.) also added a solo home run in the first game, her first homer as a Muskie. Makenna Hullinger (Fr.-St. John, Ind.) also posted three hits in the opener, and Skylar Hall (So.-Negaunee, Mich.) earned the win throwing four innings and allowing four hits and four runs with five strikeouts before Nelson took over and finished with two scoreless innings. Hullinger pitched a complete game in the second contest, allowing eight hits and four runs (two earned) with ten strikeouts to improve to 7-5 this season.

The Muskies' scheduled non-conference doubleheader against Mount Mary University on Wednesday has been canceled due to the predicted cold temperatures. Lakeland is back in action Thursday when it hosts Concordia University Chicago at 3 p.m.
