RACINE, Wis. – The Lakeland University men's tennis team's stay in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament ended up a short one, with Milwaukee School of Engineering prevailing 5-0 in a tourney first round match Tuesday at the Racine Indoor Tennis Club.
The No. 3 seed Raiders won all three doubles matches and then needed just two singles wins to complete the dual win and advance to a semifinal match against second-seeded Concordia University Wisconsin. Sixth-seeded Lakeland saw its season end with a 3-11 record.
The Muskies nearly got on the board with a victory at No. 1 singles, where
Jacob Larson (
Sr.-Wauwatosa, Wis.) and
Nick Larson (
So.-Sheboygan, Wis.) challenged MSOE's Alec Dam and Alex Nakasato before falling 8-6. The Raiders would lose just one game in winning the other two doubles matches to take a 3-0 match lead.
Nakasato defeated
Evan Vorpahl (
So.-Sheboygan, Wis.) 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and that and a 6-2, 6-1 win by MSOE's Joe Chong over
Ben Busalacchi (
So.-Muskego, Wis.) at No. 4 singles proved to be the deciding wins. The remaining matches per conference tourney guidelines were not completed, including
Nick Larson's No. 1 singles match where he trailed Dam 5-4 in the first set.
