Lakeland storms back past Beloit to stay unbeaten, give Mobley 200th win

BELOIT, Wis. – The Lakeland University men's soccer team answered Beloit College's first goal with a five-goal outburst and gave head coach Rick Mobley his 200th career win with a 5-1 victory Saturday afternoon.

Michecadet Gethand (Jr.-Jackson, Wis.) scored twice and the Muskies scored five times in a stretch of just over 25 minutes to win going away and stay unbeaten on the season at 2-0-2 overall heading into their Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener Wednesday at home against St. Norbert College.

The win also marked a milestone for Mobley in his 24-year career coaching men's soccer at the collegiate level. His first 184 wins came at Carroll University before coming to Lakeland in 2018, and his rebuild of the Muskies included the program's best record last year since 2013. This year Lakeland is off to its best start through four matches since 1982.

The Muskies and Buccaneers (0-4 overall) were in a scoreless deadlock for the match's first 55 minutes until Beloit scored first with a goal by Edgar Caracoza. Lakeland responded just over two minutes later, though, tying when Gethand scored his first goal of the season with an assist from Michael Barragan (Jr.-Milwaukee, Wis.).

The Muskies tallied the go-ahead goal in the 70th minute, with Cole Cederwall (Fr.-Spring Valley, Calif.) scoring a goal for third time in four matches, with Jordan Davis-Troller (Fr.-Cottage Grove, Wis.) assisting for a 2-1 lead.

Lakeland then added three more goals in a stretch of less than seven minutes to salt the game away. Dirk Dell Adema (Fr.-Howards Grove, Wis.) scored his first collegiate goal with an assist from Gethand at 76 minutes, 10 seconds of the match, and Gethand scored his second goal 2:35 later. The Muskies added one more goal in the 84th minute with an own goal knocked in by the Buccaneers.

Lakeland controlled play in the second half with an 11-3 shots advantage and finishing outshooting Beloit 15-8 for the game. Ben Taylor (So.-Sheboygan, Wis.) made four saves in goal for the Muskies, while Teddy Bahu made six saves for Beloit.

The Muskies host St. Norbert Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Taylor Field.
