OSHKOSH, Wis. –
Katie Metzler (
Jr.-Kewaunee, Wis.) was named to the all-tournament team for the Lakeland University women's volleyball team as it split two matches at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh M.V.P. Invitational Saturday.
The Muskies shook off a first set loss to defeat Lake Forest (Ill.) College 21-25, 25-21, 25-15, 25-14 in their first match of the day. Lakeland then faced a formidable task against nationally ranked UW-Whitewater and fell in three sets 25-18, 25-17, 27-25. The Muskies finish the weekend with a 4-4 mark on the season, with three of their four losses coming to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schools this week in separate events hosted by UW-Oshkosh.
Metzler had a big match on offense and defense in Lakeland's win over Lake Forest. She led the Muskies with 13 kills and a .391 hitting percentage and also posted seven blocks (four solo, three assisted).
Maeve Sullivan (
Jr.-Chicago, Ill.) also set a career high with 25 digs,
Emily Duchow (
Sr.-Potter, Wis.) finished with 37 assists and
Susana Stevens (
So.-Las Cruces, N.M.) came off the bench to post 11 kills and a .364 hitting percentage. Metzler, Stevens and
Hailey DeGrave (
Jr.-Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) with eight kills without an error in 15 swings keyed Lakeland hitting .315 for the match with 55 kills and 16 errors in 124 attacks.
The Muskies had a tougher time as expected with the strong Whitewater team, hitting .027 with 26 kills and 23 errors. UWW also added ten team blocks and ten service aces in the match.
Kelly Swope (
Jr.-Heyworth, Ill.) finished with seven kills and 14 digs, three behind Sullivan's team-high of 17 digs. Duchow also posted 18 assists and 10 digs. The Muskies had a golden chance to send the match to at least a fourth set, leading 20-12 in the third set before the Warhawks fought all the way back to win 27-25.
Lakeland now will prep for its Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener when it travels to take on Wisconsin Lutheran College Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Milwaukee.
