Second half rally stings Lakeland again as Wisconsin Lutheran rallies for 25-21 win

WAUWATOSA, Wis. – Wisconsin Lutheran College's Matthew Davis connected with Carter Schneider for a go-ahead 74-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter and Lakeland University saw a lead slip away again in a 25-21 loss Saturday night on WLC's Homecoming at Raabe Stadium.

The Muskies received another big game from freshman running back Jatron Bevly (Springfield, Ill.) but the Warriors scored the game's final 12 points to come from behind and defeat Lakeland for the first time since 2017. Lutheran dealt Lakeland a third straight dispiriting loss to start the season, as the Muskies dropped to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.

Bevly scored all three touchdowns and along with Robby Michael (Fr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) gave Lakeland a pair of 100-yard rushers. Bevly followed up his school-record 343 yards a week ago by carrying 34 times for 141 yards, and Michael added 131 yards rushing in his first collegiate start at quarterback.

Bevly's third touchdown, a two-yard run to cap a 13-play, 75-yard drive, gave the Muskies a 21-13 lead with 4 minutes, 35 seconds left in the second quarter. Lakeland would not score again the rest of the game, including on six second half drives, with three ending on downs, two on punts and another on an interception.

Lakeland led most of the game for the second straight game. A week after the Muskies held a 34-10 lead before Buena Vista rallied with 31 straight points to end the game, Wisconsin Lutheran (1-2 overall, 1-0 NACC) trailed for almost the entirety of the first 3 1/2 quarters, from the time Bevly scored his first touchdown from nine yards out less than five minutes into the game.

The Muskies led 14-3 in the first quarter after Bevly's second score on a five-yard run, but the Warriors hung around. Davis and Schneider connected for their first touchdown on an 18-yard pass late in the first quarter, and Arnulfo Ortega kicked four field goals, including a 46-yarder just before halftime to get WLC within 21-16.

Ortega also booted a 29-yard field goal in the third quarter to cut Lakeland's lead to 21-19, but the three points represented a win for the defense after the Warriors had driven 76 yards deep into Muskies territory. Lakeland also held again, stopping WLC on downs inside the red zone late in the third quarter, and then forcing a three-and-out early in the fourth quarter.

The Muskies had Lutheran in a third down situation again with nine minutes left in the fourth, but Schneider slipped behind the defense and Davis found him with a bomb down the right sideline. Schneider received a block and raced the rest of the way 74 yards for the touchdown and a 25-21 lead.

Lakeland drove down to the WLC 15 on its next drive before a false start penalty spelled trouble. The next three plays produced just one yard, and on fourth down Michael had to throw to the end zone but was intercepted. The Muskies had one final chance starting from their 12 with 2:27 left and drove to their 48 before the drive ended on an incomplete pass with 48 seconds left.

Michael completed 11 of 30 passes for 117 yards, with Devin Martin (So.-Conyers, Ga.) catching four passes for 39 yards and Bevly adding three catches for 39 yards. Lakeland gained 305 yards on the ground and 422 yards of total offense.

Justin McMahon (So.-Kyle, Texas) paced the Muskies defense with seven tackles (six solo) and Jayson Wilder (Sr.-Milwaukee, Wis.), Jayden Tarver (So.-Phenix City, Ala.) and Andrew Cardiel (Sr.-Needville, Texas) added six tackles each. Jake Leclaire (Jr.-Stuart, Fla.) added one sack.

Davis passed for 309 yards for Wisconsin Lutheran, which gained 495 yards of offense and also did not commit a turnover. Justin Parbs also rushed 23 times for 117 yards.

Lakeland is back on the road next week when it travels to face St. Norbert College at 1 p.m. in De Pere.
