Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Lakeland ends string of defeats, plays to scoreless tie with Concordia

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The Lakeland University men's soccer team avoided a loss but was unable to take that one step further as it settled for a 0-0 tie with Concordia University Chicago Wednesday night at Taylor Field.

The Muskies ended their four-game losing streak in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play with a draw in the matchup of the lone conference teams without a win entering Wednesday. Lakeland tied for the third time this season and is now 2-4-3 overall (0-4-1 in conference) while the Cougars are now 0-7-1 overall and 0-4-1 in the NACC.

Opportunities were few for both teams with most play contested in the middle third of the field and a limited number of good chances for both teams.

Concordia got the better of play in the first half, especially in the first 25 minutes where the Cougars registered four shots and three corner kicks. Lakeland goalkeeper Ben Taylor (So.-Sheboygan, Wis.) had to stop a pair of shots just over a minute apart in the 24th and 25th minutes to keep the guests off the board, while the Muskies' best chance came in the 14th minute. Michecadet Gethand (Jr.-Jackson, Wis.) carried the ball with speed into the Cougars' end and passed right to Cole Cederwall (Fr.-Spring Valley, Calif.), who from the right struck a cross that Andres Gonzalez (Jr.-Jamul, Calif.) on a sprint to the goal just missed getting to on the back post.

Concordia nearly broke the tie in the 56th minute when Giuseppe Lazzara hit a shot off the top of the crossbar, but Lakeland had more chances in the second half. Gonzalez hit a header in the 62nd minute that was stopped by CUC keeper Nicholas Pasut, and another chance came in the 83rd minute when Cederwall from midfield dribbled through four defenders, eventually getting the ball to Kidus Samson (Jr.-San Francisco, Calif.) who crossed to Gonzalez, whose header was again saved. The Muskies also had one last great chance with just over three minutes left when an attack wound up with Joseph Reyes (Jr.-Pico River, Calif.) running on to a shot from 20 yards out straight on and hitting a laser that Pasut dove to his left to save.

Concordia finished with a 10-9 edge in shot attempts for the game, while Lakeland posted a 7-5 edge in shots on goal. Taylor made five saves for the Muskies while Pasut stopped seven shots for CUC.

Lakeland is home again for its next match Saturday when it hosts Benedictine University at 2 p.m.
