Falcons turn momentum in second half, defeat Muskies 4-0

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Concordia University Wisconsin broke a scoreless tie in the 57th minute on the way to four second-half goals and the Lakeland University men's soccer team lost 4-0 in its season finale Wednesday night at Taylor Field.

The Falcons swung momentum in a big way in the final 35 minutes and the Muskies finished their season with a 4-12-2 mark and 3-8-1 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. Concordia also wrapped up its season, just missing out on a spot in the NACC Tournament and finishing 6-9-2 overall and 4-6-2 in the NACC.

The Falcons ended up dominating the second half as play swung in a big and sudden way. Lakeland had held an advantage in play through the first 45 minutes and had come out strong in the second half, with a number of quality opportunities including a bending shot by Brendan Perry (Jr.-New Baltimore, Mich.) that required a diving save by CUW goalkeeper Jeremy Munoz, plus terrific passing in the box nearly generating a shot from the doorstep before an offsides call.

The Falcons had their best chance of the game, though, just over 11 minutes into the second half, and would take advantage. Ivan Cuellar got in close on the left and his shot went past goalkeeper Zach Heiman (Jr.-Racine, Wis.), but defender Aung San (Sr.-Charlotte, N.C.) was in position to clear the ball from the goal line. Concordia stayed on the attack, though, and Joey Moua got another chance from the doorstep and scored 10 seconds later for the game's first goal.

Things quickly went downhill from there for the Muskies. That included just 100 seconds later when Lakeland committed a hard foul just inside the left edge of the penalty area, giving the Falcons a penalty kick which Carson Kelly converted to make it 2-0.

The Muskies would steady some there and would have some opportunities, the best coming when Dirk Dell Adema (So.-Howards Grove, Wis.) hit a looping shot that came down just high of the crossbar with 13 minutes left. Concordia mounted another attack in the 81st minute, though, and though Heiman stopped Alishan Sharipov's first shot, Angel Uriostegui was in position for the rebound and easily punched it into the net for a 3-0 lead. CUW then would be the beneficiary of another penalty kick with 4:07 left in the match, with Ivan Cuellar converting for the final score.

The Falcons initially came out strong, but Lakeland would settle in and got the better of play in the first half, finishing with a 5-4 lead in shot attempts. Brahm Dell Adema (So.-Plano, Texas) and Michael Barragan (Sr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) both had quality opportunities on goal and Lakeland spent a good bit of the half in the Concordia end, especially as the half went on.

Barragan, Perry and Alessandro Bianchi (Sr.-Venice, Italy) led the Muskies with two shot attempts each. Heiman made four saves and Carson Galla (Sr.-Deerfield, Wis.) came on and made one save playing the final 7:27 in his final game.

Concordia finished with a 16-9 lead in shots including a 12-4 margin in the second half. Munoz made four saves for the shutout win in goal.
