DE PERE, Wis. – St. Norbert College rallied to score the final three points of the fourth set and the Lakeland University women's volleyball team saw its winning streak stopped at six with a four-set loss Thursday night in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play.
The Green Knights won the battle for position in the NACC standings, prevailing on their home court 25-20, 17-25, 25-21, 25-23. St. Norbert at 8-3 in conference (16-11 overall) is now one game up on the Muskies, who dropped to 7-4 in the NACC and 12-11 overall.
With other results in the conference Thursday night, Lakeland did clinch a spot in the NACC Tournament. The Muskies were looking for more, though, in a match with two teams tied for fourth coming into the night and with the top four teams hosting a first round match in the eight-team conference tourney.
The Green Knights' firepower of Brooke Clement, Rylie Gregg, Alyssa Mills and Alli Clark proved tough to stop, with the quartet combining for 47 kills. Clement finished with 16 kills, but it was Gregg (12 kills, .269 attack percentage), Mills (10 kills, .304 hitting %) and Clark (nine kills, .444 hitting %) who were the more efficient weapons, with just nine errors between the three of them while hitting a collective .328.
St. Norbert hit .185 as a team with 55 kills and 26 errors, while Lakeland hit .124 with 40 kills and 23 errors, its lowest hitting percentage since the first game of its six-match winning streak entering the night.
The Muskies did bounce back from a slow start to dominate the second set and tie the match at 1-1, but a late comeback in the pivotal third set came just short. Lakeland trailed by as much as six in the set but rallied to tie at 20-20 after consecutive kills by
Susana Stevens (
Jr.-Las Cruces, N.M.). The teams were tied again at 21-21, but SNC would finish the set with the final four points, including a pair of blocks among the final three points.
The fourth set was the most back-and-forth one of the night, with the teams combining for 15 ties and eight lead changes. After leading early, Lakeland had fallen behind 16-13 before scoring five straight points. The Muskies served well throughout the match, tying their season high with 10 aces, and
Roseily Carrasquillo (
Jr.-Yabucoa, Puerto Rico) delivered two aces in the 5-0 run to take the lead, but the Green Knights came right back with four straight points to pull back ahead 20-18.
Lakeland fought back and took the lead at 22-21 and again at 23-22 after a pair of St. Norbert attack errors. Gregg tied it back up with a kill, though, a block by Mari Szews got the hosts to match point, and an attack error gave the Green Knights the win in four.
Stevens finished with 12 kills,
Katie Metzler (
Sr.-Kewaunee, Wis.) finished with nine kills and Swope added eight kills. Carrasquillo led the setters with 21 assists and added three service aces and
Maeve Sullivan (
Sr.-Chicago, Ill.) notched 25 digs. Swope also added a team-high four blocks (one solo, three assisted).
The Muskies home for their final three matches of the regular season, starting Saturday when they host Concordia University Chicago at noon at the Woltzen Gymnasium.
