NACC-leading Illinois Tech strikes early in shutout of Lakeland

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Illinois Tech scored just over two minutes into the match to stake a quick lead and the Lakeland University women's soccer team fell by a 6-0 score Saturday afternoon at Taylor Field.

The Scarlet Hawks scored three times in the first 21 minutes on the way to improving to 11-1-1 overall and remaining undefeated at 8-0 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. Lakeland dropped to 5-9 overall and is 1-7 in conference play.

The Muskies faced a tall task against an IIT team that is undefeated in its last 10 matches and has outscored its eight NACC opponents by a collective 34-1 score. The Scarlet Hawks finished the match with a 38-2 advantage in shot attempts, though Faith Turley (Sr.-Lincoln, Ill.) made a career-high 19 saves and Lakeland will like consider a number of the goals to have been preventable within the game's play.

Illinois Tech made Lakeland pay for mistakes or just bad luck, including the first goal by defender Gabrielle West just 2 minutes, 2 seconds in. A Muskies attempt to clear instead went to the middle of the field, and West ran on and fired a shot from 30 yards out that Turley was late to see with heavy traffic in front of her, and the ball went just under her arm and inside the right post to put IIT ahead.

The Scarlet Hawks' second goal came on a corner kick headed by a Tech player that then rebounded off a Muskie and towards the goal. The ball eventually ricocheted to IIT's Caitie Chismarich, whose shot from point-blank range was stopped by a diving Turley, but the ball went to Rachel Brettin who tapped in for a 2-0 lead.

Illinois Tech added a third goal on a penalty kick by Lucy Jorjorian after a foul on the Muskies in the box. Lakeland kept the deficit to 3-0 well into the second half, though, when the Scarlet Hawks scored shortly after a throw-in. Chismarich fended off a defender to receive a throw from Hali Parker, turned, took two touches and scored from 16 yards out past Turley and just inside the left post for Tech's first goal of the second half.

IIT added two more goals, one from Kaitlyn Walsh as she popped a ball into the air over Turley that bounced and came down in the net in the 77th minute. The final goal came in the match's final seconds as Abigail Dudek headed in a corner kick into traffic with 12 seconds left.

Lakeland finished with two shot attempts, one in each half. The first came from Alondra Reyes (Sr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) firing a shot from 25 yards out that was saved, while the second came on a terrific advance up the left sideline.
Marlen Reyes (Sr.-Milwaukee, Wis.), Gwynn Manteufel (Jr.-Kewaskum, Wis.) and Lia Armstrong (Fr.-Fort Wayne, Ind.) worked a passing game between the three of them that got Marlen Reyes a one-on-one opportunity with the goalkeeper, but her shot from 12 yards out was just off and IIT keeper Hailey Flannagan got a hand on the ball.

The Muskies are on the road for their next match Wednesday when they travel to Milwaukee to take on Alverno College at 3 p.m.
