BELOIT, Wis. –
Jenna Caterino (
Jr.-Stanton, Mich.) scored the go-ahead layup with 1:38 remaining in the game and the Lakeland University women's basketball team made the plays on both ends down the stretch in defeating Beloit College 67-60 Thursday night.
The Muskies finished scoring 11 of the game's final 13 points and picked up their second straight win in non-conference play. Lakeland recovered from an early nine-point deficit, rallied back after surrendering a nine-point lead of their own, and improved to 2-1 overall through three non-conference games.
Beloit (0-3 overall) had come back from a 47-38 deficit midway through the third quarter to take the lead at 51-49 on a three-pointer by Hailey Johnson with 9:09 left. Lakeland tied it back up on two free throws by
Lauryn Johnson (
So.-Kenosha, Wis.), and the teams went back and forth with three more ties down the stretch.
The Muskies tied it at 56-56 on a three-pointer by
Jenna Shea (
Fr.-Appleton, Wis.) and again at 58-all on two free throws by
Kerstin Sauerbrei (
Sr.-Ripon, Wis.) with 2:51 left. After a timeout with under two minutes left, Caterino caught the ball in the high post, drove around two defenders and scored with the left hand for a 60-58 lead.
Lakeland then got a stop forcing a missed layup and transitioned quickly, with Sauerbrei slipping behind the defense to score while getting fouled. She converted the three-point play, split two free throws with 35 seconds remaining and Johnson made one of two from the line after a steal with 19 seconds left for a 65-58 lead.
The Muskies rebounded from a slow start, falling behind by nine early in a foul-filled first quarter. The teams were called for a combined 19 fouls in the opening period alone, including 11 on Lakeland, and the Buccaneers took an early 17-8 lead. Sauerbrei and
Alexis Johnson (
So.-Sheboygan, Wis.) made three-pointers late in the quarter, though, and the Muskies drew within 23-19 after 10 minutes.
Beloit continued to hold the lead through most of the second quarter until Lakeland finished with a flurry. An 11-0 run going into halftime including a three-pointer and a three-point play by
A.T. Bartlett (
So.-Farmington Hills, Mich.), and
Alexis Johnson made two free throws with a second left in the half for a 38-34 halftime lead.
Sauerbrei scored 18 points and Bartlett and
Alexis Johnson both added career highs with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Caterino added seven points and tied Alexis and
Lauryn Johnson for team rebounding honors with five each. Sauerbrei also finished with a career-high five steals.
The Muskies shot 36.8%, making 21 of 57 from the field, but held Beloit to 33.3% shooting (21 of 63). Lakeland hit 6 of 24 from three-point range and was much better at the free throw line, making 19 of 24 (79.2%) while the Buccaneers hit 16 of 32 (50.0%). Elizabeth Kalk led Beloit with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
The Muskies are back home for their next game when they host the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Woltzen Gymnasium.
