Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Jaeger joins 1,000-point club, Muskies escape from Knights in overtime

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Cam Jaeger (Jr.-Oostburg, Wis.) scored his 1,000th career point and the Lakeland University men's basketball team rallied late in regulation and took control in overtime to finally put away Martin Luther (Minn.) College 100-90 Tuesday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies came back from four points down with just over a minute left to send the game to overtime, and then outscored the Knights 15-5 in the extra period to earn their first win of the season. Lakeland won its home opener and hit the 100-point mark for the third time in three games in improving to 1-2 overall.

Jaeger scored a career-high 34 points, making 9 of 15 shots from the field including 3 of 6 from three-point range and 13 of 17 from the free throw line. His final two points came on two free throws with 3.9 seconds left in overtime, and the second foul shot made him the 42nd player in program history to reach the career 1,000-point mark.

The Muskies needed just about all of Jaeger's points to defeat Martin Luther, which dropped to 0-5 but continued a trend of often giving Lakeland a hard time in the teams' meetings in recent years.

The Knights rallied from a 12-point deficit early in the second half to take a 70-69 lead on two free throws by Seth Veers with 7:39 left in regulation. MLC would then play from ahead for almost all of the rest of regulation, leading by as much as five points and going back ahead by four at 84-80 after a three-point play by Thomas Balge with 1:08 left.

Balge's score answered a three-pointer by Brayden Kennedy (Fr.-Manitowoc, Wis.) that had cut the guests' lead to one with 1:46 left, and the Muskies drew within a point again after Isaiah Hammond (Jr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) drove, scored and was fouled with a minute left to make it 84-83. MLC's Paul Frick then was fouled with 30 seconds left and hit one of two free throws, and Hammond tied the game again at 85-85 with a basket inside with 18 seconds left.

Martin Luther had the final possession of regulation, but Ethan Kjenstad missed a jumper with two seconds left and the game went to overtime. The Knights scored the first points of the extra session on a three-pointer by Kjenstad just 12 seconds in, but Jaeger answered with a triple to tie it and Jaxson Provost (Fr.-Kankakee, Ill.) hit two free throws with 3:44 left for a 90-88 lead.

The Muskies would never trail again. MLC drew back within two on a layup by Veers making it 92-90 with 2:10 remaining, but the Knights would not score again. Hammond hit an 18-footer at the end of the shot clock to make it 94-90 with 56 seconds left, and MLC would turn it over on its next possession. Aiden Polzin (Jr.-Clintonville, Wis.) scored on a layup with 28 seconds left after Lakeland just avoided a backcourt violation, and Jaeger hit four free throws in the final seconds to close it out.

Hammond tied his career high with 23 points, including 10 in the final three minutes of regulation and overtime. Polzin and Caleb Fuller (Sr.-Oshkosh, Wis.) added 11 points each. Jaeger also led the Muskies with nine rebounds and Provost finished with four steals. Lakeland shot 45.7% for the game, hitting 32 of 70 from the field.

Balge and Kjenstad scored 25 points each for Martin Luther, with the two sophomores both also setting career highs. The Knights shot 50.0% for the game, hitting 33 of 66 shots, and outrebounded the Muskies 49-34.

Lakeland is home again over Thanksgiving weekend when it hosts Lawrence University for a 3:15 p.m. start on Saturday at the Woltzen Gymnasium.
