Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Duhawks stay hot, Muskies fall at home in non-conference tilt

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Loras College continued the high-powered offense it has displayed all season and the Lakeland University men's basketball fell by a 90-72 score Monday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Duhawks went on a big run late in the first half to take over and shot 52.4% for the game in improving to 8-1 overall this season. The school from Dubuque, Iowa, also won the first men's basketball meeting with the Muskies since 1976, while Lakeland dropped to 4-6 overall this season.

The Muskies actually held Loras below a number of its gaudy season averages coming in, including points (96.3 ppg), three-pointers made (15.5 per game) and three-point percentage (40.8%). The Duhawks were in control throughout, though, racing to a 12-0 lead to start the game and blowing the game open late in the first half after Lakeland had chipped away to get close.

The Muskies trailed just 19-16 with just over nine minutes left in a foul-filled first half when Kai Buliox (Jr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) made two free throws, but Loras responded with six straight points, including four on free throws by Tyler Bass. The Duhawks continued to grow the lead, and Declan Ciurlik's bucket inside gave the guests a 48-23 bulge, in all a 29-7 run in a span of just over 6 1/2 minutes.

Loras led 50-29 at halftime and would go ahead by as much as 28 early in the second half. Lakeland steadied from there and the teams largely traded baskets most of the half until the Muskies made some hay at the end of the game, holding the Duhawks without a field goal over the final four minutes in finishing the game on a 9-1 run.

Loras finished making 33 of 63 shots even after going cold in the final minutes and hit 9 of 28 from three-point range (32.1%), tied for its low mark of the season for threes made in a game. Ali Sabet scored 24 points to lead four scoring in double figures for the Duhawks.

Cam Jaeger (Jr.-Oostburg, Wis.) scored 16 of his 21 points in the second half to lead Lakeland. Isaiah Hammond (Jr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) scored 12 points and added 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals, and Tim Ward (So.-Plainfield, Ill.) came off the bench to score 12 points, including a driving one-handed dunk early in the first half that helped the Muskies get back into the game after their slow start.

Lakeland shot 26 of 65 (40.0%) from the floor, including 9 of 26 from three-point range. Jaxson Provost (Fr.-Kankakee, Ill.) also added eight points off the bench.

The Muskies are on the road Wednesday for their final game before Christmas when they travel to face Carroll University at 7 p.m. in Waukesha.
