GREENCASTLE, Ind. – Lake Forest (Ill.) College scored the final nine points of a back-and-forth game and the Lakeland University women's basketball team dropped a 73-66 decision in the third place game of the Amy Hasbrook Memorial Tournament hosted by DePauw University.
The Foresters made the last move in a game that featured nine ties and nine lead changes, making one of two free throws with just over a minute left to take the lead. Lake Forest would score its final seven points from the foul line over the last 1 minute, 8 seconds, and won the consolation game of the tourney to improve to 2-9, while the Muskies dropped to 3-8 this season.
Lakeland was much more competitive than in its loss the day prior to host DePauw, which claimed the tourney championship with an 82-52 victory over Franklin (Ind.) College Saturday. The Muskies led for more than 27 minutes against Lake Forest, even as neither team led by more than seven points at any time.
Lakeland took its largest lead of the game just 29 seconds into the fourth quarter when
Jenna Shea (
Fr.-Appleton, Wis.) hit a three-pointer to put the Muskies up 58-52. The Muskies pushed the lead back out to five again when
A.T. Bartlett (
So.-Farmington Hills, Mich.) hit a jumper to make it 63-58 with 5:43 left, but Lake Forest rallied to go ahead 64-63 just over a minute later on a short jumper by Maurissa Edwards.
Lakeland went back ahead on its next possession after
Jenna Caterino (
Jr.-Stanton, Mich.) drained a three-pointer for a 66-64 lead, but the Muskies would not score again. Lakeland missed its final eight shots from the field and committed two turnovers over the final 4:03, though the Foresters also made just one field goal in that time, a layup by Melissa Gomez to tie it at 66-66 with 2:56 to play.
Lake Forest took the lead when Edwards split two free throws with 1:08 left, and the Foresters grabbed the offensive rebound on her second shot and added to their lead when Edwards made two more free throws with 1:02 remaining. The Muskies would commit a turnover on their next possession and missed three three-point tries in the final 22 seconds.
The teams were tied at 38 at halftime, with Lakeland taking a five-point lead after one period after a three-pointer by
Bree Arsenault (
Sr.-Hermansville, Mich.) made it 23-18. The Foresters came back to lead by six in the second quarter, but the Muskies finished the half on a 9-3 run with Arsenault's layup with 12 seconds left in the half tying the score for the sixth time in the opening half.
Bartlett scored a career-high 16 points, making 6 of 8 shots from the field including 4 of 5 from three-point range on her way to being selected for the all-tournament team. Caterino also scored 14 points and added seven rebounds and
Dani Damrow (
Fr.-Elkhart Lake, Wis.) also pulled two seven rebounds to go with eight points. Bartlett and
Kerstin Sauerbrei (
Sr.-Ripon, Wis.) also posted five assists each.
The Muskies shot 34.3% for the game, making 24 of 70 field goals, including 10 of 31 from three-point range. Lake Forest made 44.3% of its shots (27 of 61) led by Edwards with 22 points. The Foresters also posted a 44-38 rebounding advantage.
Lakeland will open 2024 by playing at home for the first time in over a month, and returns to Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play when it hosts Concordia University Chicago Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
