Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Sauerbrei moves up all-time 3-point list, Muskies start fast, handle Sabres for first NACC win

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – Kerstin Sauerbrei (Sr.-Ripon, Wis.) moved into second place on Lakeland University's all-time list for career three-pointers made and the Muskies women's basketball team rode a big second quarter to a 65-55 win over Marian University Saturday afternoon.

Lakeland outscored the host Sabres 17-4 in the second period on the way to a 42-22 halftime lead. The Muskies maintained a double-digit margin the rest of the way and picked up their first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference win of the season, improving to 3-5 overall (1-1 NACC).

Sauerbrei made three three-pointers in the first quarter and all four of her threes for the game in the first half. Her final triple of the game gave her 139 three-pointers made in her career, moving her past Bailey Grayvold (2013-17) into sole possession of second place on Lakeland's all-time women's basketball list for career three-pointers made. Sauerbrei is now 18 behind Kristi (Thill) Bachar's school record total of 157 threes made from 2001-06.

Sauerbrei's three triples were part of a quick start in the first quarter, when the Muskies made six three-pointers as a group on the way to a 25-18 lead after 10 minutes. A.T. Bartlett (So.-Farmington Hills, Mich.) and Jenna Shea (Fr.-Appleton, Wis.) also added triples as Lakeland led by as much as 12 in the opening period.

The Muskies then pulled away in the second quarter, holding the Sabres (2-6 overall, 0-2 NACC) to just two field goals over 10 minutes. Lakeland scored 12 straight points to start the period, with Caris Jaeger (Fr.-Oostburg, Wis.) scoring on an offensive rebound and putback to make it 37-18 with 5 minutes, 11 seconds left in the first half. The Muskies would lead by as much as 22 when Bree Arsenault (Sr.-Hermansville, Mich.) made a three-pointer to push the advantage to 42-20 just before halftime.

Marian made a run in the third quarter and slashed the deficit to 10 when Chelsea King made two free throws, cutting Lakeland's lead to 52-42 after three periods. The Sabres would get no closer, though, as Dani Damrow (Fr.-Elkhart Lake, Wis.) scored eight of her 12 points in the final quarter and the Muskies answered quickly every time Marian drew closer.

Sauerbrei tied for team scoring honors with 12 points and added a team-high seven rebounds. Damrow also scored a season high and added six rebounds, Jenna Caterino (Jr.-Stanton, Mich.) added 10 points and Lauryn Johnson (So.-Kenosha, Wis.) added five rebounds and four assists along with five points. In all 11 different players scored for Lakeland, which shot 39.3% (24 of 61) and hit eight three-pointers.

King scored a game-high 26 points for Marian but received little help as the Sabres shot 32.8% (21 of 64), including just 4 of 29 from three-point range.

Lakeland now takes some time off for final exams and will not play again until Tuesday, Dec. 19, when it travels to face Ripon College at 5:30 p.m. in Ripon.
