AURORA, Ill. –
Hunter Henson (
Fr.-Menomonee Falls, Wis.) drove home 14 kills but the Lakeland University men's volleyball team fell to Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference-leading Aurora University in four sets Saturday night.
The Muskies were able to take a set but fell to the Spartans 25-12, 25-19, 23-25, 25-16. Lakeland dropped to 6-16 overall and 1-9 in the NACC with two matches remaining in its season.
The Muskies staged a rally in the third set to stay alive in the match. Aurora (14-10 overall, 10-1 NACC) led 14-10 and still held a 20-18 lead late, but Lakeland scored four straight points to take the lead, including a service ace from
Eli Weinrich (
Fr.-Mequon, Wis.) and a kill from setter
Chase Anderson (
Fr.-Hartford, Wis.). The Spartans would come back and the teams were tied at 23-23 before an Aurora service error and a kill by Henson sent the match to a fourth set.
The Spartans never trailed in the final set, building early leads of 9-4 and 13-6 and then pulling away late. Lakeland made a brief 4-1 run to get within 14-10 and the teams traded the next six points before Aurora scored three straight for a 20-13 lead.
Henson led Lakeland with 14 kills, his sixth match with at least 10 kills this season.
Ben Busalacchi (
Jr.-Muskego, Wis.) and
Tim Matijevic (
Jr.-Palatine, Ill.) both added eight kills each.
Jakob Donohue (
Fr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) also added fie kills with a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage in five attacks. Anderson finished with 31 assists and seven digs and
Drew Green (
Sr.-Brooklyn Park, Minn.) paced the defense with eight digs.
Mateo Scharosch led Aurora with 10 kills. The Spartans hit .326 for the match with 43 kills and 13 errors in 92 attack attempts.
Lakeland is on the road to face Illinois Institute of Technology Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Chicago, before closing its season at home next Saturday against St. Norbert College at 1 p.m.
