KOHLER, Wis. – Concordia University Chicago won tough matches at all three top singles flights and nipped Lakeland University 5-4 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference men's tennis play Sunday at Sports Core.
The Cougars edged the Muskies in the battle for the sixth and final spot in the NACC Tournament. Concordia (2-10 overall, 2-5 NACC) clinched the No. 6 seed in the tourney while Lakeland finished its season 1-7 overall and 1-6 in the conference.
The Muskies received singles wins at No. 4, 5 and 6 flights, including
Levi Everts (
So.-Hartford, Wis.) defeating CUC's Diego Loveshe 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 singles.
Robert Grimes (
So.-Plymouth, Wis.) also topped Kevin Januska 7-5, 6-3 at No. 5 singles, and
Jacob Swigert (
Fr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Joshua Gustafson at No. 6 singles.
Lakeland came so close to earning the deciding point in the dual in all three singles matches. The closest was at No. 3 singles, where
Alessandro Bianchi (
Sr.-Venice, Italy) dominated the first set but ended up dropping a 0-6, 7-5, 6-3 decision to Reynaldo Leal.
Concordia's Caleb Gustafson also defeated
Ben Busalacchi (
Jr.-Muskego, Wis.) 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 2 singles, and Nathan Stringer won 6-2, 7-5 over
Evan Vorpahl (
Jr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) at No. 1 singles. All three doubles matches were also close, with the Muskies earning the win at No. 2 doubles with Bianchi and Everts defeating Leal and Caleb Gustafson 8-5.
