PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The Lakeland University men's volleyball team saved some of its best for last, closing its season on a high note with a five-set win over St. Norbert College Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies rallied from deficits of 1-0 and 2-1 in the match to top the Green Knights 21-25, 25-21, 17-25, 25-20, 15-11 in both teams' season finale. Lakeland snapped a six-match losing streak and finished the season with a 7-17 overall record and a 2-10 mark in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.
The Muskies dug deep and received huge matches from
Hunter Henson (
Fr.-Menomonee Falls, Wis.) and
Ben Busalacchi (
Jr.-Muskego, Wis.) among a number of key performances.
Henson finished with a career-high 21 kills, hitting .421 for the match. The freshman got better as the match went on with 11 kills over the final two sets, including six kills in the deciding fifth set. Busalacchi added 13 kills as well as eight digs and five service aces. Three of his aces came consecutively in the fifth set, keying a 5-0 run that also included a kill by Henson to give Lakeland a 12-8 lead.
The Muskies were competitive in all three early sets despite going behind in the match, and they began to turn momentum in the fourth set. Lakeland trailed 15-12 in the fourth before going on what would become a 10-3 run. Henson had three kills in the run and Busalacchi and
Drew Green (
Jr.-Brooklyn Center, Minn.) both added service aces, including Green as part of four straight points to give the Muskies a 22-17 lead.
The Muskies outhit St. Norbert (8-19 overall, 4-8 NACC) for the match with a .233 attack percentage to the Green Knights' .186 rate. Lakeland also piled up 14 service aces and added 13 blocks, with freshman
Jakob Donohue (
Milwaukee, Wis.) recording a career-high seven blocks (one solo, six assisted) and
Colin Kenney (
Jr.-Shorewood, Wis.) and
Tim Matijevic (
Jr.-Palatine, Ill.) both taking part in five blocks each, including combining for five solo blocks between them.
Chase Anderson (
Fr.-Hartford, Wis.) added five kills plus 41 assists and Kenney added three service aces.
Eli Weinrich (
Fr.-Mequon, Wis.) also led the team with eight digs. The match was the final one for five Muskies seniors, including Matijevic-graduating early this spring-plus
Alex Burgos (
Salem, Wis.),
Martin Carrillo (
Mundelein, Ill.),
Nick Equihua (
Santa Maria, Calif.) and
Isaiah Vance (
Zion, Ill.).
Josh Hauke paced St. Norbert with 15 kills and Morgan Wilson added 10 kills. Ryan Conway also posted 15 digs.
