Muskies get third win with shutout of Prairie Fire

GALESBURG, Ill. – Alondra Reyes (Sr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) scored the opening goal early in the first half and the Lakeland University women's soccer team upended Knox (Ill.) College 2-0 Monday afternoon in a non-conference game.

The Muskies completed a two-day swing in western Illinois with a victory, following up a narrow loss to Augustana (Ill.) College a day earlier. Lakeland continued to alternate wins and losses early in the season and improved to 3-2 overall.

Reyes scored the opener just over nine minutes into the first half. A corner kick by Mikayla Belasco (Fr.-Muskegon, Mich.) rattled around the box before a Knox defender's clear attempt when right to Reyes on the edge of the 18-yard box. Reyes fired from just right of the goal and put it into the right corner of the net for her fourth goal of the season.

The Muskies held that 1-0 lead into the second half, but then faced trouble when Reyes received a red card in the 54th minute. The result was Lakeland played with 10 players the remaining 36 minutes, but the Muskies maintained and even added onto their margin.

Belasco took possession of a free ball at midfield and took several dribbles forward before launching a looping shot from 35 yards out. The shot came in just below the crossbar, and Knox goalkeeper Sara Mirani got both hands on it but could not corral it, with the ball dropping down behind her for a goal, Belasco's first collegiate goal.

Lakeland held the rest of the way with Faith Turley (Sr.-Lincoln, Ill.) getting the shutout with three saves. The Muskies outshot the Prairie Fire 8-4, with Reyes, Belasco and Lia Armstrong (Fr.-Fort Wayne, Ind.) all finishing with two shots each.

Mirani made three saves in goal for Knox, which dropped to 0-5 on the season.

Lakeland is back home Wednesday when it hosts St. Norbert College at 7 p.m. at Taylor Field in its Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener.
