Lakeland men's soccer rallies past Concordia Chicago for first NACC win

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Michael Barragan (Sr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) scored the go-ahead goal in the second half and the Lakeland University men's soccer team went on to pick up its first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference win of the season, defeating Concordia University Chicago 4-2 Saturday.

Four different players scored goals as the Muskies rallied from a first half deficit to improve to 2-3-1 overall this season and 1-1 in the NACC. Concordia dropped to 0-6 overall and 0-2 in conference.

Barragan tallied his fifth goal of the season and what would prove to the be game-winner in the 65th minute. After settling down a loose ball from Carson Galla (Sr.-Deerfield, Wis.) inside the penalty area, he dribbled away from defenders before turning and firing from 30 yards away with a shot into the upper left corner past a diving attempt by CUC goalkeeper Joseph Perez.

Lakeland added an insurance goal with just over 10 minutes left with Galla again involved. The senior got to a free ball near midfield and chipped it forward towards the goal and behind the defense. Dirk Dell Adema (So.-Howards Grove, Wis.) outraced a defender to the ball, settled it and then bent a shot from 15 yards out that curled inside the right post for a 4-2 lead.

Lakeland scored first in the game, needing less than 2 1/2 minutes to go ahead before the Cougars answered with two goals to take the lead. Joseph Reyes (Sr.-Pico River, Calif.) sent in a second service after an initial free kick rebounded back to him, and his high chip towards the goal was headed in by Jordan Davis-Troller (So.-Cottage Grove, Wis.), who used all of his 6-foot-5 height to get to the ball before the goalkeeper for his first goal of the season.

Concordia responded just over a minute later to tie on a goal by Julian Yanez, and the Cougars took the lead in the 26th minute as Alexander Lechowicz scored for a 2-1 lead. The Muskies responded with a quick strike this time, with Michecadet Gethand (Sr.-Jackson, Wis.) scoring his first of the season less than a minute later, heading in a corner kick by Barragan to tie the score.

Ben Taylor (Jr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) made nine saves in goal to get the win for Lakeland, which was outshot 14-13 and put just six shots on goal, scoring on four of them.

The Muskies now get ready for their long-awaited home opener, playing at Taylor Field for the first time this season after six road games to start. Lakeland hosts Milwaukee School of Engineering Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
