WAUKESHA, Wis. – Dirk
Dell Adema (
So.-Howards Grove, Wis.) scored on a penalty kick in the second half but the Lakeland University men's soccer team fell to Carroll University 2-1 in its season opener Friday night at Carroll's Schneider Stadium.
The Muskies fell behind just over three minutes into the game and played from behind the rest of the way. Carroll won the first meeting between the teams in 19 years, since the squads played to a 1-1 tie Sept. 12, 2004 and current Lakeland coach
Rick Mobley was the head coach of the Pioneers.
Dell Adema buried a penalty kick in the 72nd minute of the match that drew the Muskies within 2-1. Lakeland would not get another shot off the rest of the way in a match where Carroll controlled possession and finished with a 19-3 advantage in shot attempts.
The Pioneers scored the opening goal 3 minutes, 5 seconds into the match. Marti Solanellas Vilella scored with an assist from Zane Walters, and the scored remained 1-0 into halftime.
Carroll added a second goal in the 66th minute, with Solanellas Vilella scoring again unassisted to make it 2-0 before the Muskies halved the margin less than five minutes later.
Zach Heiman (
Jr.-Racine, Wis.) started in goal and made four saves.
Ben Taylor (
Jr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) came on in the second half and also made four saves.
Michael Barragan (
Sr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) recorded Lakeland's other two shot attempts.
The Muskies are back at Carroll on Sunday to take on the University of La Verne (Calif.) in a neutral site non-conference match starting at 11 a.m.
