APPLETON, Wis. – Senior
Baylee Babcock (
Mauston, Wis.) and freshman
Sydnee Conway (
Monroe, Wis.) were double winners and the Lakeland University women's tennis team opened its season with a 6-3 win over Lawrence University Saturday morning in a non-conference dual.
The Muskies won two of three matches in doubles play and four of six singles matches. Lakeland also overcame a pair of first-set losses in singles play to rally and win the final two sets in convincing fashion.
Babcock was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Lawrence's Claire Bildsten at Number 4 singles, while Conway defeated Fanta Jatta 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6 singles. Babcock and Conway also teamed up earlier at No. 3 doubles to defeat Jatta and Lizzy Angemi by an 8-3 score.
Also victorious was the doubles team of
Mary Blossom (
So.-Farmington Hills, Mich.) and
Sadie Conway (
Sr.-Monroe, Wis.). Blossom and
Sadie Conway defeated Bildsten and Chloe Lamb 8-6 at No. 2 doubles.
The Muskies also rallied to win a pair of three-set singles matches.
Olivia Heling (
So.-West Bend, Wis.) was a winner at No. 1 singles, defeating Lamb 4-6, 6-0, 6-2, and
Kassidee Webb (
So.-Castroville, Texas) came back to defeat Logan Kane 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.
"We started off slow in doubles and most singles matches, but we maintained our composure and started playing loose and creatively," said Lakeland Head Coach
Pete Barth. "I'm proud of them for their vision and strategic ideas today."
The Muskies are home for their next match and step into Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play when they host Wisconsin Lutheran College this Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at Sports Core in Kohler.
