Muskies solid at home in conference sweep of Stars

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Setter Emily Dickmann (Fr.-Grafton, Wis.) finished with 19 assists plus five kills and Katelyn Kitsembel (So.-Lake Mills, Wis.) set a career high with 18 digs as the Lakeland University women's volleyball team handled Dominican University in three sets Thursday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies topped the Stars 25-19, 25-19, 25-20 for their first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference win this season. Lakeland improved to 6-9 overall and 1-2 in conference after defeating Dominican for the second straight year, while the Stars dropped to 6-8 overall and 1-2 in the NACC.

The Muskies played at home for just the second date this season and the first time in more than three weeks, and delivered a solid, steady performance. Lakeland held Dominican to .034 hitting percentage (30 kills, 26 errors), posted advantages on serve and blocking, and outlasted the Stars to win most longer points in the match.

The Muskies hit .242 in the first set with 12 kills and just four errors and took advantage of 11 Dominican errors, including a string of five straight attack errors in a seven-point run that turned an 11-8 deficit into a 15-11 lead. Lakeland also made the plays late in the second set, finishing on a 9-3 run to take the set after the teams were tied at 16-16.

The Muskies started strong with a 5-2 lead in a third set that would be one of runs. Dominican answered with six straight points, but the Muskies responded with seven straight, including three kills from Brelynn Scoles (Sr.-Kewaskum, Wis.) on the way to a 12-8 lead.

Lakeland went on another five-point run and led 17-10 after Roseily Carrasquillo (Jr.-Yabucoa, Puerto Rico) served her second ace of the night, but Dominican crawled back within 19-18 after an ace by Olivia Mendell. The Muskies would score the next three points, though, including a kill and an ace by Kelly Swope (Sr.-Heyworth, Ill.), and Lakeland closed it out with a kill by Katie Metzler (Sr.-Kewaunee, Wis.) on its second match point.

Metzler finished with nine kills and Susana Stevens (Jr.-Las Cruces, N.M.) totaled eight kills, while Dickmann added five kills in seven attacks. Swope also added 11 digs and Briuna Harper (Jr.-Waxahachie, Texas) finished with three blocks (two solo, one assisted) as the Muskies posted a 6-2 advantage in blocks. Swope and Maeve Sullivan (Sr.-Chicago, Ill.) also added two service aces each as Lakeland held a 7-3 lead in aces.

Cassidy Spies led Dominican with nine kills and added 15 digs. Olivia Mendell totaled 25 assists and three aces and Miriam Guler added 16 digs.

The Muskies are home again Saturday, hosting Aurora University at 4 p.m. at the Woltzen Gym as part of Lakeland's Homecoming festivities.
