PLYMOUTH, Wis. –
Cam Jaeger (
Jr.-Oostburg, Wis.) scored 20 points and grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds but the Lakeland University men's basketball team went cold in virtually every area late and fell to Edgewood College 79-66 Wednesday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies made just two field goals over the final eight-plus minutes and were plagued by turnovers and missed free throws in the late going in falling to the Eagles for the second time this season. Edgewood backed up a two-point triple-overtime win in the teams' first meeting in December and dropped the Muskies to 5-11 overall and 3-6 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.
Lakeland battled back from trailing most of the first half to take a slim lead early in the second half, and appeared to be in solid position coming down the stretch when
Kai Buliox (
Jr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) hit a turnaround jumper with nine minutes left in the game to trim Edgewood's lead to 57-56. The Muskies would score just 10 points the rest of the way, though, making 2 of their final 16 shots from the field. Lakeland also committed four turnovers and made just 6 of 14 free throws in that time.
The Eagles (8-9 overall, 7-4 NACC) still did not pull away, and a three-point play from Jaeger followed by
Asanjai Hunter (
So.-Racine, Wis.) splitting two free throws cut the guests' margin to 69-64 with 2:46 left. Drew Houtakker hit a jumper 13 second later, though, and Edgewood capitalized after the Muskies missed three of four three throws, with Cade Ellingson scoring on a layup and then Luke Cervelli making two free throws to make it 75-65 with 1:22 remaining. Lakeland would go quietly and in frustrating fashion, missing its final six shots from the field the rest of the way.
Edgewood led for much of the game, though the Muskies maintained contact after falling behind by seven early and tied the game at 27-27 on a layup by
Isaiah Hammond (
Jr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) with 5:22 left in the first half. The Eagles would creep back out ahead and led 38-34 at halftime after a steal by Dawson Hughes and a layup by Trey Traeder in the final seconds of the half.
Lakeland finished making 24 of 65 field goals (36.9%), including just 10 of 30 in the second half (33.3%). The Muskies also hit 15 of 25 free throws (60.0%) and committed 13 turnovers, seven more than Edgewood.
Jaeger finished with a big double-double and Hammond joined him with a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds as Lakeland finished with a 47-39 rebounding advantage. Buliox also added 16 points and seven rebounds.
Edgewood shot 44.9% (31 of 69) for the game, including 15 of 30 (50.0%) in the second half. Ellingson scored 18 points and led four players scoring at least 14 points for the Eagles, who finished with advantages of 42-30 in scoring in the paint plus a 15-4 lead in points off turnovers.
The Muskies are back on the road Saturday when they travel to face Milwaukee School of Engineering at 7 p.m. in Milwaukee.
