Lakeland pushes NACC-leading Edgewood for a half before falling on road

MADISON, Wis. – Alexis Johnson (So.-Sheboygan, Wis.) came off the bench to score a career-high 15 points and the Lakeland University women's basketball team put a scare into the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference leaders for a half before falling to Edgewood College 75-58 Wednesday night at the Todd Wehr Edgedome.

The Muskies started strong but the Eagles outscored Lakeland 41-18 over the second and third quarters to stay undefeated in the NACC at 7-0 (8-8 overall). The Muskies dropped to 4-11 overall and 2-4 in conference play.

Lakeland dominated the first quarter and led for most of the first half, going ahead by as much as 12 points early. The Muskies scored 12 straight points in the first quarter while holding Edgewood scoreless over a nearly six-minute stretch, and an offensive rebound and putback by Meghan MacPhee (Fr.-Marquette, Mich.) gave Lakeland a 16-4 lead with 2 minutes, 18 seconds left in the period.

Lakeland led 18-7 after one quarter and despite cold shooting in the second still held the lead until the Eagles' Ava Berg tied the game at 20-20 with 2:38 left in the first half. Vivian Guerrero scored inside with 1:17 left in the half to put Edgewood ahead for good at 24-22, but the Muskies still trailed just 28-25 at halftime and were within 30-28 early in the third quarter after a three-pointer by Jenna Caterino (Jr.-Stanton, Mich.).

The Eagles would pull away with a 14-2 run over the next 4:17, with a layup by Moli Haak giving the hosts a 44-30 lead. The margin would remain double digits the rest of the way. Lakeland closed back within 11 early in the fourth quarter when Caterino made another three-pointer to make it 50-39, but Edgewood answered with a 13-3 run to put the game away. Jayden Nortier hit a jumper with 6:42 left for a 63-42 lead, the Eagles' largest of the game, though the Muskies chipped away and got as close as 70-58 after a three-pointer by Kerstin Sauerbrei (Sr.-Ripon, Wis.) with 1:12 left.

Johnson made 6 of 10 shots from the field and added four rebounds for Lakeland, which finished shooting 37.1% (23 of 62). Caterino and A.T. Bartlett (So.-Farmington Hills, Mich.) both added 10 points each and Caterino finished with seven rebounds. Sauerbrei also added nine points plus five assists and Sadie Conway (Sr.-Monroe, Wis.) also scored seven points.

Kallie Norby scored 24 points for Edgewood, which finished shooting 48.3% (28 of 58), including a robust 58.1% (18 of 31) in the second half. Nortier also added 15 points.

The Muskies are back home Saturday when they host Milwaukee School of Engineering for a 2 p.m. start at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
