GOSHEN, Ind. – Lakeland University opened the match winning the first set but Goshen (Ind.) College responded and defeated the Muskies in four sets Saturday afternoon at Goshen's Ruth Gunden Gymnasium.
The Maple Leafs bounced back to prevail 19-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-22 in the non-conference match and the first-ever men's volleyball meeting between the two schools. Goshen won its opener while Lakeland dropped to 1-4 overall on the season.
Hasan Hadzic totaled 18 kills and five service aces for the Maple Leafs, members of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The 6-foot-9 hitter was the big difference as Goshen finished with an advantage on the attack and a 10-3 margin in service aces for the match
The Muskies started well, bouncing back from a 5-1 deficit in the early going to pull ahead for the first time at 9-8 on a kill by
Eli Weinrich (
So.-Mequon, Wis.). Lakeland would go on a 13-5 run in all to take a 14-10 lead and would hold the point the remainder of the first set to get the early jump in the match.
Goshen would come back to lead the entirety of the next two sets, holding a slim lead early and slowly pulling away late in both sets. The fourth set would be the closest of the match, with 11 ties and four lead changes. Lakeland appeared in good shape coming down the stretch when
Chase Anderson (
So.-Hartford, Wis.) and
Colin Kenney (
Sr.-Shorewood, Wis.) combined for a block on Hadzic for a 20-18 lead. The Maple Leafs would respond with five straight points, though, including a pair of blocks, and Goshen would win the match on its second match point after a Lakeland service error.
Ben Busalacchi (
Sr.-Muskego, Wis.) led the Muskies with 14 kills and two service aces.
Jordan Davis-Troller (
So.-Cottage Grove, Wis.) added a career-high eight kills on 13 attack attempts. Lakeland hit .140 as a team with 35 kills and 21 errors in 100 attempts.
Anderson totaled 23 assists and nine digs,
Drew Green (
Sr.-Brooklyn Center, Minn.) posted 12 digs and
Levi Everts (
Jr.-Hartford, Wis.) added six kills and 10 digs.
Ishmail Bangura added 10 kills for Goshen, which hit .184 with 47 kills and 24 errors. Avery LaForce added 36 assists and Pablo Sanchez finished with a match-high 16 digs.
Lakeland will remain in Indiana overnight and will take on Trine (Ind.) University tomorrow at 2 p.m. Central time in Angola, Ind.
