Muskies break out offensively, break skid with 79-62 win at Alverno

MILWAUKEE – The Lakeland University women's basketball team scored 30 points in two different quarters and rode one of its most productive offensive performances of the season to a 79-62 win over Alverno College Monday night at Reiman Gymnasium.

Four players scored in double figures and the Muskies finished two points off their season high for scoring in getting back in the win column, snapping a six-game losing skid. Lakeland improved to 5-14 overall and is now 3-7 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference after winning Monday's game that was rescheduled after being postponed Jan. 13 due to a snowstorm.

The Muskies never trailed in the game, though they weathered a second quarter lull to pull back away in the second half. Lakeland saw an early 15-point lead dwindle to two just after halftime, before blowing the game open in the second half.

The Muskies opened the game with a season-high 30 points in the first quarter, making 62.5% of their shots out of the gate. Lakeland led 24-9 just over six minutes into the game after a basket by Jenna Caterino (Jr.-Stanton, Mich.), and led 30-18 after one period after Jenna Shea (Fr.-Appleton, Wis.) drained a three-pointer just before the quarter expired.

The Muskies went cold in the second quarter, making 3 of 14 shots and scoring just seven points, and the Inferno (3-16 overall, 1-9 NACC) crawled back into the game. Alverno closed within 37-33 by halftime, and then scored the first basket out of halftime to get within two at 37-35.

Lakeland broke the game open over the final five minutes of the third quarter, though, finishing the period on an 18-3 run for another 30-point quarter. Bree Arsenault (Sr.-Hermansville, Mich.) hit three three-pointers in the run, and the Muskies built the lead to 67-47 after 30 minutes before stretching it out even more in the fourth. Kerstin Sauerbrei (Sr.-Ripon, Wis.) made back-to-back three-pointers in a 26-second span and Lakeland took its largest lead at 77-51 with 5:52 left in the game.

Alexis Johnson (So.-Sheboygan, Wis.) reset her career high with 17 points, making 7 of 9 field goals in just 14 minutes while fighting foul trouble. Caterino scored 13 points, A.T. Bartlett (So.-Farmington Hills, Mich.) totaled 12 points and Shea added 10 points.

Lakeland finished shooting 43.1% (28 of 65), including 9 of 28 from three-point range, the team's best three-point shooting outing since hitting 10 threes against Lake Forest (Ill.) College Dec. 30. Arsenault finished with nine points on three threes and also added four rebounds off the bench.

Bartlett also pulled down a career-high nine rebounds and Lauryn Johnson (So.-Kenosha, Wis.) also added eight rebounds off the bench as the Muskies won the rebounding battle 49-40. Shea also finished with three assists, three steals and two blocked shots.

Shiauna Nixon-Boyd led Alverno with 14 points and Kyla Jamerson added 12 points and nine rebounds. The Inferno shot 31.3% (20 of 64), including 27.8% (10 of 36) in the second half.

Lakeland is back home on Wednesday when it hosts Illinois Institute of Technology for a 5 p.m. start at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium. The game will tip off a women's-men's doubleheader with the Muskies men's team also hosting IIT at 7:15 p.m.
