Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Edgewood sweeps Lakeland in three sets in Madison

MADISON, Wis. – Susana Stevens (Sr.-Las Cruces, N.M.) finished with a match-high 15 kills and continued moving up Lakeland University women's volleyball's all-time career kills list but the Muskies were swept by Edgewood College Saturday afternoon at the Todd Wehr Edgedome.

The Eagles completed a 25-17, 25-23, 25-15 win to stay atop the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference standings at 7-1 (14-9 overall). Lakeland dropped to 5-3 in conference play and 7-16 overall and has now alternated wins and losses in its last six NACC contests.

Stevens finished with at least 15 kills in a match for the ninth time this season. She also moved into sole possession of eighth on the Muskies' all-time list for kills with 1,082, breaking a tie for eighth with Heather Heberlein (1,067 kills from 2002-05) entering the match.

Unfortunately for Lakeland, Stevens accounted for more than half of the team's kills, as the Muskies finished with 28 kills with 15 errors in 96 attacks for a .135 hitting percentage. Only one other Muskie finished with as many as five kills, with Isabella Westerholm (Sr.-Prior Lake, Minn.) reaching that mark.

The Eagles hit .263 as a team with 45 kills and 15 errors and had three players with at least nine kills. Cassidy Spies led Edgewood with 14 kills and also added match highs with 12 digs and five service aces.

The Eagles blew open a close first set with a 12-3 run late and never trailed in winning the final set. Lakeland's closest challenge came in the second set, which included seven ties and four lead changes but the Muskies could never retake the lead after the hosts scored three straight to go ahead 17-15.

Rylee Esquibel (Fr.-Devine, Texas) led Lakeland with eight digs and Caitlyn Pernsteiner (So.-Arpin, Wis.) added seven digs plus two service aces. Sydney Gay (Fr.-Rice Lake, Wis.) finished with 12 assists and Roseily Carrasquillo (Sr.-Yabucoa, Puerto Rico) added 10 assists.

The Eagles avenged a three-set loss at Lakeland last year that was Edgewood's lone loss in NACC play. The Muskies also continued to struggle in Saturday matches this season, dropping to 2-9 on Saturdays.

Lakeland is home for its next three matches starting with Thursday when it hosts Alverno College at 7 p.m.
