PLYMOUTH, Wis. –
Addison Weed (
Fr.-Tinley Park, Ill.) scored a tying goal in the first half but Marian University scored the go-ahead goal in the 70th minute and went on to defeat the Lakeland University women's soccer team 3-1 Wednesday night at Taylor Field.
The Muskies played the Sabres on even terms for most of the match but again came up just short against a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opponent. Lakeland dropped to 1-10-3 overall and 0-7-3 in the NACC, a league record that includes a pair of losses by two goals or less as well as three ties.
The Muskies finally broke a five-game streak of going without a goal, needing less than 10 minutes to answer after Marian (7-8-3 overall, 4-4-3 NACC) opened the scoring in the 19th minute.
Marlen Reyes (
Sr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) and
Malaya Sperber (
Fr.-Grafton, Wis.) stopped a Sabres rush and began a counterattack that would end with the two on the attack just outside the 18-yard box.
Jenna Caterino (
Sr.-Stanton, Mich.) then sent a pass into the box off the foot of Sperber to Reyes, who passed to Weed on the left hash mark. The freshman collected and fired a shot on the ground from 15 yards out just inside the left post for her third goal of the season and tying the match at 1-1 in the 29th minute.
The score stayed that way well into the second half, with both teams trading opportunities. Reyes had two chances from the left wing early in the second half that were both stopped, but the match changed after a foul called on Lakeland just outside and left of the 18 as the 70th minute approached. Sophia Romo's free kick got to Muskies goalkeeper
Ingrid Steinbock (
Fr.-Sheboygan, Wis.), but in traffic she bobbled the ball and the Sabres pounced quickly, with Jacqueline Campos amidst a mess of players poking it in past Steinbock for the lead goal.
Marian added on one more goal with just over six minutes left in the match. A foul was called in the box to give the Sabres a penalty kick, but Steinbock stopped Ysabella Sanchez's initial shot. Sanchez was able to get to the rebound, though, settled it and still had time to poke it to the right past Steinbock covering the left post and into the goal before the Muskies defense could recover.
Steinbock finished making nine saves in goal while Chelsea King made seven saves for Marian. The Sabres finished with a 20-11 advantage in shots, though just a 9-8 lead in the second half. Weed finished with four shot attempts and Reyes added three shots for the Muskies.
Alondra Reyes (
Sr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) also finished with a pair of shots, both on goal in the second half.
Lakeland takes its final road trip of the season on Sunday when it travels to face Rockford University at 3:30 p.m.
