PLYMOUTH, Wis. –
Susana Stevens (
Las Cruces, N.M.),
Isabella Westerholm (
Prior Lake, Minn.) and
Briuna Harper (
Waxahachie, Texas) all put up big numbers on Senior Day and the Lakeland University women's volleyball team made quick work of a second straight opponent, defeating Rockford University Saturday afternoon.
The Muskies needed just over an hour to defeat the Regents 25-19, 25-16, 25-14. With the win Lakeland wrapped up a berth in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament, the sixth team to clinch its spot in the eight-team tourney.
The Muskies (9-16 overall, 7-3 NACC) recognized six senior members of the team before the match, and then proceeded to handle a conference opponent in a convincing sweep for the second time in three days.
Lakeland defeated Alverno in three sets Thursday night with a season-best hitting percentage plus 16 service aces, and the Muskies were nearly as sharp against an improved Rockford (10-11 overall, 1-9 NACC) team. Lakeland hit .309 for the match with 45 kills and 16 errors, and also held the Regents to a .087 hitting mark. The Muskies never let the guests build any significant momentum, as Rockford scored only as many as three consecutive points in the match on two occasions.
The Muskies never trailed in the first set and trailed only briefly early in the second and third sets. The second set included a 9-1 run to take control early and another 6-1 burst late, and the third set included two 5-1 runs early and a close to the match with seven of the final eight points, including back-to-back kills by Westerholm to close it out.
Stevens finished with 16 kills and a .364 hitting percentage, and with 1,116 career kills has moved into sixth on the Muskies' all-time career list. She surpassed Katie Kallas (1,103 kill sfrom 1997-200) for seventh and then Kimberly Linger (1,104 from 2006-09) for sixth, and is now just three kills behind Holly Wellman (1,119 from 1998-2001) for a tie for fifth on the list.
Westerholm also added a season-high 10 kills with a .471 hitting mark, and the hitting success for the middle blockers continued with Harper adding nine kills in 13 attacks for a .615 attack percentage.
All five seniors started the match including
Roseily Carrasquillo (
Yabucoa, Puerto Rico) and
Faith Spannbauer (
Greenfield, Wis.), who was injured at the start of the season but opened the match on the court before subbing out. Senior student assistant coach Cialinn Johnson also was honored with her former teammates as another four-year member of the squad.
Rylee Esquibel (
Fr.-Devine, Texas) finished with 11 digs and
Ryan Figi (
So.-Hartland, Wis.) and
Caitlyn Pernsteiner (
So.-Arpin, Wis.) added nine digs each. Pernsteiner also led the team with three service aces.
Sydney Gay (
Fr.-Rice Lake, Wis.) also finished with 22 assists and Carrasquillo added 19 assists.
Madisen Perry led Rockford with 12 kills, but the rest of the Regents combined for just 10 kills. Rockford finished with 22 kills and 15 errors in 80 attacks.
Lakeland now gets ready for its regular season home finale on Halloween night against St. Norbert College this Thursday at 7 p.m.
