Lakeland University puts a cap on its women's soccer season by playing at home when it hosts Concordia University Wisconsin Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Taylor Field.
The series between the Muskies and Falcons dates back to 1994, Lakeland's second year of playing women's soccer. Concordia has dominated the series much of this century, winning 18 straight including a 7-1 victory last season.
Alondra Reyes scored the lone goal for the Muskies while Autumn Snow scored twice and five others added one goal each for the Falcons. The closest recent meetings came in 2016 and 2021, both matches decided by three goals including a 3-0 victory for Concordia in the last meeting at Taylor Field Oct. 27, 2021. Lakeland last defeated Concordia 1-0 in the Lake Michigan Conference Tournament semifinals Nov. 2, 2005. Amy Christenson scored the lone goal and Alli Weiss made nine saves as Lakeland continued its march toward the LMC tourney title and its second and most recent trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Lakeland last time out: Won at Rockford 2-1 Sunday
The Muskies finally broke through for their first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference win of the season, winning on the road against the Regents.
Marlen Reyes and
Malaya Sperber scored goals, with
Chloe Bartlett credited with an assist on the second goal and
Elizabeth Brown contributing the pass to Reyes that led to the opener. Sperber notched her team-high fourth goal and Lakeland snapped a 12-game winless streak that included three ties but three more losses by two goals or less.
Ingrid Steinbock made seven saves in goal.
Concordia last time out: Lost at Wisconsin-La Crosse 6-2 last night
The Falcons stepped out of conference play and traveled across the state yesterday, falling to the Eagles on the road in La Crosse. UW-L scored all six of its goals in the first half in the first 22 minutes of a dominating win, while Shay Lange and Hailey Whittow scored goals for CUW, Lange near the end of the first half and Whittow in the 84th minute. Brooke Braga made four saves and Kara Claussner added seven saves in relief.
Despite the loss, Concordia is still one of the best teams in the NACC this year, coming into Wednesday in a three-way tie for second in the conference at 8-1-2. The Falcons played Dominican to a scoreless tie in their last league match on Saturday, gave Illinois Tech the lone blemish on its conference mark with a 1-1 tie, and have lost only to MSOE in NACC play.
Last chance: Wednesday marks the final home game and the final game of the careers of five Muskies:
Jenna Caterino,
Gwynn Manteufel,
Alondra Reyes,
Marlen Reyes and
Abby Runkel. The five were honored on Senior Day on the team's last weekend home match Oct. 19 against Edgewood. The Reyes twins both will finish in the top 15 all-time at Lakeland in goals scored, with Alondra currently tied for 11th with 17 and Marlen right behind in 15th with 16 goals.
Alondra Reyes also is 14th on the program's all-time list for points with 38. Caterino and Runkel also come into the night with the distinction of starting all 51 of the team's matches over the last three seasons.
