MEQUON, Wis. – Concordia University Wisconsin scored the go-ahead goal early in the second half and the Lakeland University men's soccer team closed out its season with a 2-1 loss Wednesday afternoon at CUW's Fitting Field.
Austin Eigenberger (
Fr.-Grafton, Wis.) scored a goal with just seconds remaining in the first half but the Muskies lost by a goal for the fourth time this season and finished 4-14-1 overall and 2-9-1 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference, including one-goal losses in their last two games. Concordia improved to 5-9-3 overall and 5-6-1 in conference and to the doorstep of one of the final berths in the NACC Tournament, pending conference results later in the night.
The Falcons scored both of their goals within the first seven minutes of each half, including the opener by Carlos Valdivia just 6 minutes, 51 seconds into the match for a 1-0 lead.
Lakeland appeared to have been shut out in the first half, but put on a final rush in the last 15 seconds.
Gavin Pinchart (
Sr.-De Pere, Wis.) did the work chasing the ball down to the right corner and initially attempted a cross that was blocked. He got back to the loose ball past his defender near the end line and had space to carry it in before cross a pass in front of the goal mouth into oncoming traffic. Eigenberger got a touch on the ball and sent it in the net with just seven seconds left in the half to tie the game.
CUW applied pressure early in the second half with four shots in the first five minutes, and
Porter Gigstead (
Fr.-Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) followed with two shots in a span of seven seconds in the 51st minute. The Falcons would cash in a minute later, though, as a shot by Harris Burgos was stopped by
Zach Heiman (
Sr.-Racine, Wis.) but Ramon Elias knocked in the rebound to make it 2-1.
Lakeland just missed tying it in the 77th minute when a shot by
Dunia Wangu (
Fr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) hit off the right post. Wangu had the Muskies' final chance in the 88th minute but his shot was blocked and Concordia cleared the ensuing corner kick and held on for the win.
The Falcons finished with a slim 18-15 edge in shot attempts, and both teams finished with five shots on goal. Gigstead finished with five shot attempts and
Aldo Rangel (
Fr.-Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) added four shots.
Heiman made three saves in goal while playing the second half after fellow senior
Matt English (
Cheyenne, Wyo.) started and played the opening half. Jeremy Munoz made four saves for Concordia.
