Muskies battle Concordia in the rain before falling in finale

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Janae Kilsdonk (Jr.-Appleton, Wis.) came off the bench to score a goal in the second half and the Lakeland University women's soccer team closed its season with a quality effort before falling 3-1 to Concordia University Wisconsin Wednesday night in a steady rain at Taylor Field.

The Muskies gave one of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference's top teams a battle, rallying in the second half for a goal and threatening for more late before running out of time. Lakeland finished its season with a 2-11-3 overall record and a 1-8-3 mark in the NACC, while Concordia finished the regular season 11-5-2 overall and 9-1-2 in conference.

Kilsdonk made the most of a brief appearance, coming on in the 70th minute as a substitute at forward and playing for the first time in five games. Two minutes later it was Jenna Caterino (Sr.-Stanton, Mich.) advancing up the left side and down near the end line, where she crossed a pass in front of the goal. Kilsdonk crashed the goal, got to the pass and poked it past second CUW goalkeeper Kara Claussner for her third collegiate goal and first this season.

Kilsdonk would exit a few minutes later for teammate Jennifer Champney (Fr.-Antioch, Ill.) as reserves saw action in the final game of the season, but the Muskies would continue to threaten and were awarded a free kick in the 76th minute. Alondra Reyes (Sr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) took the kick from 25 yards out straight on, and her shot went just over the crossbar, keeping it a two-goal game.

The Falcons led 2-0 at halftime, taking the lead when the Muskies missed several opportunities to clear and Anna Gong scored the opening goal in the 24th minute. CUW also added a second goal just before halftime, with Madi Schrader's cross going to Shay Lange for the score.

Lakeland actually had the game's first golden opportunity, though, as Marlen Reyes (Sr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) sent a diagonal pass ahead to Addison Weed (Fr.-Tinley Park, Ill.) less than four minutes in, setting her up for a one-on-one with goalkeeper Brooke Braga. With a defender closing in, though, Weed's shot from 15 yards out went high, keeping the match scoreless.

Concordia got the better of play in the first half, but the Muskies when in possession were able to hold it and generated several chances, including another shot high by Weed in the 25th minute and shots by Marlen Reyes and Alondra Reyes. The Falcons charged early in the second half but Lakeland initially fought it off, including back-to-back shots in the 52nd minute when Ingrid Steinbock (Fr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) stopped a first and a rebound attempt by Sabrina Moore was blocked on the goal line by defender Allison Solberg-Kieler (Jr.-Ridgeway, Wis.).

CUW would eventually add a third goal at 55:03 of the match when a handball was called on the Muskies in the box. Moore converted the penalty kick to make it 3-0.

Concordia finished outshooting Lakeland 19-9, including a 10-5 lead in shots on goal. Steinbock made six saves in goal for the Muskies.

The game was the final for five Lakeland seniors: Caterino, the Reyes sisters, Gwynn Manteufel (Kewaskum, Wis.) and Abby Runkel (Burlington, Wis.).
