Aurora quick strikes in second half end Lakeland men’s soccer upset bid

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Aurora University scored twice in a span of 12 seconds near the mid-point of the second half and the Lakeland University men's soccer team fell by a 5-1 score Friday night at Taylor Field.

The Muskies once again played one of the top teams in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference tough for well over a half but again came up short and dropped to 2-9 overall and 1-5 in conference play. Aurora improved to 6-3-3 overall and remained one of three teams in the conference without a loss with a 5-0-1 league mark.

The Spartans led just 2-1 in the 65th minute when a turnover and quick transition from end to end put Lakeland in trouble. Striker Enrique Gonzalez, one of the leading goal scorers in NCAA Division III, got loose and had a shot one-on-one that goalkeeper Zach Heiman (Sr.-Racine, Wis.) got a piece of, but the ball went right to Branden Dolezal for his second goal and a two-goal lead.

Aurora was back on the attack just seconds after the ensuing kickoff, and this time Gonzalez cashed in with a shot from right of goal that hit the back of the net just inside the left post. In just 12 seconds the Spartans doubled their total and were in control the rest of the way.

Aurora scored first in the match with Gonzalez and Dolezal executing a quick give and go with Gonzalez punching it home in the 27th minute. The Muskies came back to tie, though, after Spartans goalkeeper Alex Ageladelis made a mistake and handled the ball outside of the keeper's area. Jordan Davis-Troller (Jr.-Cottage Grove, Wis.) took a free kick from 20 yards out nearly straight on, and his blast swished the back of the net in the upper right corner for his second goal of the game and a 1-1 tie.

Lakeland was ever so close to getting to the half tied, but the Spartans scored with 23 seconds in the first half. Eric Anderson chased down a long pass ahead from midfield and fed it to the middle to Dolezal, who had an easy tap in right in front of the goal for a 2-1 lead.

Dolezal added one more goal in the 75th minute for a hat trick, and Gonzalez's two goals give him 16 goals on the season, now most in Division III. Aurora finished with a 21-3 lead in shot attempts including a 16-2 margin in shots on goal.

Freshman Chris Gallego (Sheboygan, Wis.) had the other shot on goal for the Muskies, coming in the second half. Aldo Rangel (Fr.-Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) also added a shot attempt.

Lakeland is home for the third straight game this coming Wednesday when it hosts Wisconsin Lutheran College at 7 p.m. at Taylor Field.
