PLYMOUTH, Wis. –
Ingrid Steinbock (
Fr.-Oostburg, Wis.) made 10 saves, including a number of the spectacular variety and Lakeland University and Aurora University played to a 0-0 tie in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference women's soccer match on the Muskies' Homecoming Saturday evening at Taylor Field.
The Muskies and Spartans went back and forth all game long with both teams having a number of golden opportunities. Neither could break through and Lakeland is now 1-6-3 overall and 0-3-3 in the NACC after playing to a draw for the third time in its last five matches.
The Muskies have three ties in a season for the first time in program history after a match that lacked for scoring but not excitement. The teams combined for 32 shot attempts, 16 shots on goal, 13 corner kicks and plenty of length-of-the-field transitions both ways.
The game was played on a warm fall night with very windy conditions, with a sustained wind of better than 20 miles per hour blowing throughout. Lakeland had the wind in the first half but Aurora (2-8-2 overall, 1-3-2 NACC) had the advantage in the second half, when Steinbock especially made a series of big stops.
The freshman keeper tipped straight in the air and then caught a hard shot by Aurora's Cassie Garcia from 10 yards out in the 62nd minute, and ranged over to the right post to turn away a shot by Larissa Barreto shortly after a free kick just over three minutes later. Steinbock also faced a one-on-one against Spartans leading scorer Lauren Bliefernicht with just over 20 minutes left and dove to her right to knock the ball away, and stopped another shot from point-blank range by McKenna Kunz in the 73rd minute.
Lakeland had a number of quality chances of its own, even into the wind in the second half. A Spartans pass ahead blocked by
Alondra Reyes (
Sr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) turned into a Muskies rush in the 60th minute, with
Malaya Sperber (
Fr.-Grafton, Wis.),
Marlen Reyes (
Sr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) and
Addison Weed (
Fr.-Tinley Park, Ill.) working ahead to get Weed a shot from 23 yards out that hit the top of the crossbar.
Lakeland was on the attack again three minutes later, when
Lia Armstrong (
So.-Fort Wayne, Ind.) sent a ball through ahead to Sperber on the run, who crossed to
Marlen Reyes, but an Aurora defender kept her from getting full contact on her shot attempt.
The Muskies later had their best attempt of the match with just over five minutes left. Steinbock saved another shot from inside the keeper's area, and her punt toward the right sideline went to
Chloe Bartlett (
So.-Canton, Ill.) and triggered another quick rush. Sperber made a move to lose one defender, dribbled past another defender and then found a wide-open
Marlen Reyes just left of the goal, but her shot went just wide right of the goal.
Aurora finished with a slim 17-15 edge in shot attempts, including a 10-6 lead in shots on goal. Bliefernicht led the Spartans with eight shots, but the Lakeland defense including
Alondra Reyes,
Gwynn Manteufel (
Sr.-Kewaskum, Wis.),
Abby Runkel (
Sr.-Burlington, Wis.) and
Allison Solberg-Kieler (
Jr.-Ridgeway, Wis.) held the speedy Bliefernicht without a point for the first time in five matches.
Melina Cane made six saves in goal for Aurora, which also finished with a 9-4 edge in corner kicks.
The Muskies are back on the road Wednesday to face Wisconsin Lutheran College at 7 p.m. in Wauwatosa.
