Lakeland falls at St. Norbert in final football road trip on season

DE PERE, Wis. – Patrick Oden rushed for five touchdowns for St. Norbert College and the Lakeland University football team was defeated 55-13 Saturday afternoon at Donald J. Schneider Stadium.

The Green Knights scored 41 first half points, including 27 in the second quarter as the Muskies took their third straight loss. Lakeland dropped to 3-5 overall and 3-4 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference going into its season finale next Saturday against Rockford University.

St. Norbert (6-3 overall, 6-1 NACC) scored touchdowns on eight of its first 11 possessions, including its first two possessions of the game and five straight possessions over the second and third quarters. The Green Knights' early scores quickly put the Muskies in a hole they never would dig out of.

St. Norbert led 14-0 early in the second quarter when Lakeland cut the hosts' lead in half with its biggest offensive play of the season. Facing 3rd-and-24 on its own 13-yard line after consecutive sacks, Robby Michael (Jr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) aired out a deep ball down the right sideline that hit Kolby Cohen (Sr.-Missouri City, Texas) perfectly in stride, and he raced 87 yards for a touchdown that with the extra point by Noah Foster (Fr.-Greenville, Mich.) made it 14-7.

The Green Knights would drive 75 yards in seven plays on their next drive, though, and a three-yard touchdown pass by Peyton Lyon to Mitch Van Vooren made it 21-7 midway through the second quarter. The final 2:13 of the quarter would then be a disaster for Lakeland, as SNC scored three touchdowns, all on short fields, needing to drive just 23 yards combined for the three scores. An interception, a bad punt snap and a blocked punt gave the Green Knights prime field position on three straight drives, and St. Norbert quickly cashed in all three times to make it 41-7 by halftime.

The Green Knights also scored on their first two possessions of the second half, including a 16-yard run by Oden for his fifth score one play after a fumble deep in Lakeland's own territory. Lakeland was able to put a sustained drive together early in the fourth quarter, going 67 yards in eight plays with Jeremy Kobe (Jr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) hauling in a 31-yard pass from Michael in the end zone for a touchdown.

St. Norbert finished with 267 yards rushing and 408 yards of total offense while the Muskies were held to 265 yards, including just 68 yards rushing on 35 attempts. The Green Knights also held possession for nearly 35:52, posting a nearly 12-minute advantage in time of possession.

Michael completed 10 of 28 passes for 198 yards and rushed 19 times for 35 yards. Caleb Besaw (Jr.-Conroe, Texas) caught four passes for 67 yards and Cohen, Kobe and Caden Kleparski (Fr.-Colby, Wis.) added two catches each.

Jake Leclaire (Sr.-Stuart, Fla.) again was a disruptive force on defense with four tackles for loss for eight yards among his six tackles. Markese Collins (Jr.-Phenix City, Ala.) also added six tackles and Shamond Oliver (Jr.-Phenix City, Ala.) and Justin McMahon (Sr.-Kyle, Texas) intercepted passes.

Lakeland finishes its season Saturday at home against Rockford for Senior Day at 1 p.m. at Taylor Field.
